As mentioned, Site Controls provides a means to control certain settings on a 'per site' basis. However, how it operates is little more obscure as every site has an entry in Site Controls....
... either a site specific one listed in the My Settings sections,
... if not, it will be placed into one of the Master Settings categories.
If the site is using a Master Settings category and you change any of the settings, eg via the Shield on its Tab, or by changing the render engine, it becomes 'customised' and hence gets an individual entry in My Settings.
So if you find that you're changing a setting on lots of site, eg render engine, you probably need to adjust the 'Master Setting' categories.
Note that trusted sites just means sites validated by one of Netscapes Trust Partners so both sex.com and cnn.com are trusted sites, so trusted may not mean quite what you expect.....
You can bypass the Master Settings as suggested previously, but the ''I don't trust this site' stuff may be useful..... This is a list of sites that one of the partners believes is potentially dangerous, eg scam, phishing, virus infected etc....
....If you unwittingly browse to one of these you get a Warning before the site is loaded. You can also reduce the browser features the site can use, eg no Javascript, Java, Active X, Cookies etc. Keeping this list up to date is why the default refresh rate is every hour.
One shame in the current implementation, is that when you go into Options--> Site Controls, the cursor is not positioned over the entry actually being using for the current site. Instead it's positioned over either the last site edited if the site has a My Settings Entry, or at the top entry in My Settings if a Master Setting is being used.... This can make it hard to determine which settings to edit.......
....Best advice is to alter the settings via the Tab Shield Menu.
Note: if you click the 'Manage Trust Settings' button here, this does position the cursor over the correct entry in My Settings.
