Microsoft's Macintosh Business Unit released Messenger for Mac 5.0 with tabbed viewing and support for Live Communications Server 2005.
According to Microsoft, Tabbed viewing is a new approach for Mac customers who use instant messaging for work and for play. Users can simultaneously access corporate and personal Messenger accounts and set a unique user status on each.

Please note, Microsoft Messenger for Mac 5.0 still does not support Audio or Video chat, unlike it's Windows version.
For multi-person video and audio chat, iChat 3 is the best solution, works under AIM and Jabber networks.

Having tried this new MS Messenger for Mac, there's only one thing I can say about it without using
extremely strong language . . . it stinks! This has got to be the crashiest thing that Microsoft has
released since Windows Malignant Edition. It's less stable than a rabid rottweiler on crack!
Everytime I launch the program, a "service unavailable" error appears, then less than 10 seconds
later . . . crash! So, I relaunch it. Same error appears. A few short seconds later . . . crash!
The program has now "unexpectedly quit" on me more than 20 times in the last two minutes!
What the hell do Microsoft think they're playing at? Releasing something so damn buggy, then
classing it as "final" when it's actually pre-pre-pre-alpha quality, is completely unacceptable!
(Even Netscape 6.0 was never this bad, and that's really saying something!)
Steer well clear of this junk, until 6.0 is released, or until there's at least a 5.x bugfix release!

Mozilla = Swiss Army Knife: It's versatile, reliable, and contains useful tools.
Microsoft Internet Explorer = Old Swiss Cheese: Full of holes, and it stinks! |

When I used it, it was very stable for me. Maybe it's stability is dependant on specific configurations? I was using Mac OS X 10.3.7 Panther.

And does your Mac meet the requirement (if any)?

When all one has to do to install it is extract the "Microsoft Messenger.app" file from the "Messenger500.dmg"
disk image file into the Applications folder, how can one not actually install it correctly? Unless one is
actually dumb enough to attempt to install it into Mac OS 9.x, or even into Windows!

The only stated system requirement on Microsoft's Mactopia website for this app is Mac OS 10.3.x.
My system specs:
B+W PowerMac G3
300Mhz Processor
768MB of SDRAM
Mac OS X 10.3.9
Anyway, before I actually permanently delete this thing from my Mac, whereabouts are the
personal profile folders kept that store stuff like saved chats and MSN Hotmail login details?
Maybe if I delete those, and reinstall the program afresh, it won't keep crashing all the time!
(I'm not holding my breath in this instance though!)

Microsoft's Mac Unit is not that bad.

I've deleted the relevant preference files related to Microsoft Messenger, and dragged it's app file to the
trash, and after re-downloading a fresh copy of "Messenger500.dmg" from Microsoft, reinstalled it . . .
The first thing that came up, was the MS Messenger Setup Assistant, which configures it to run with
my MSN Hotmail login info. Surprisingly, this ran without any crash problem. Surely it'll work now?!?
I logged in, it displayed my contact list . . . then it crashed . . . again!
I logged in again, it displayed my contact list . . . then it crashed . . . again!
This happened three more times. I'm bloody sick of it now. The app is now permanently deleted.
I am now using an open source clone called aMSN Messenger. The official app can get stuffed!

Believe me DJGM, you don't want to count the times that aMSN crashed on me...
My personal reccomendation to you, would be the usage of a client called Proteus, which closely resembles the look and stability of iChat, but with support for multiple networks.

I've used aMSN a fair bit over last few months, mostly on Linux, now also on Mac. I've only experienced
one crash with it, on an installation of Ubuntu Linux on someone else's machine about two months ago.
So far, the Mac version seems quite stable. A damn sight more stable than the official app, I might add!

Ok, I'll look into trying that one. Time to consult Google to get a link for that program, methinks!
