Sea monkey 2.0.5

Postby LARRYB » Mon 19 Jul, 2010 6:16 pm

I just tried to run V2.0.5 over my seamonkey V1.1.18. After reading the installation guide, nowhere was there any mention of deleting the older version first.

I downloaded and ran the new version, after about 10 seconds it told me that it was installed. I then launched V2.0.5 and noticed that all my email addresses, bookmarks were not loaded and only 1 of my email accounts were loaded.

I then tried to uninstall both versions and reinstall V2.0.5. Again it did not pick up my email address, bookmarks and all my email accounts.

Now I'm sweating bullets..................

I then uninstalled V2.0.5 and reinstalled V1.1.18. My email accounts, bookmarks and email addresses came back up.

Now I'm thinking there is something wrong with the new version. Nowhrere in the documentation does it mention how to import the data from V1.1.18 to V2.0.5.

Any help???

Since I had v.1.x and 2.x at the same time, with two separate installations, and separate profiles, I, never, had any problem. I am not sure if you should be asked about importing setting, but, it is clear that v.2.x has a different format, and it creates its own profile. Uninstalling one version does nothing to the other's profile.
At this point, I would say that it should be possible to import, or copy/paste most of the files from the 1.x to the 2.x profile, but I can assure you that there is nothing wrong with the new version. It is not well supported, so that may be the reason why some features which should be there are not.

I did try to import the files but the V2.0.5 could not find the email, bookmark files..

If i remember correctly the extension of the email and book marks are .FLID?

I never heard of a .FLID extention, but mail would be in the Profile folder(location varies with operating system).
Mail accounts have pairs of files, of the type Inbox and Inbox.msf. The best way to proceed would be to create new accounts, and then, copy the files with no extention from the 1.x profile, and paste them into the appropriate folder of the 2.x profile. In WinXP the path is: C:\Documents and Settings\user_name\Application Data\Mozilla\SeaMonkey\Profiles\xxxxxx.default. The format of the profile is of the same kind as Firefox or Thunderbird.
The path for 1.x is: C:\Documents and Settings\user_name\Application Data\mozilla.org\SeaMonkey.
Copy/Paste will work, only, if Seamonkey is closed, from Windows Explorer. The technique is identical to that used , in the past with Netscape and Mozilla.
Bookmarks are easy to handle: Bookmarks|Manage Bookmarks|Tools|Import|select Seamonkey1.x
As for Mail accounts, you can do it with Seamonkey open, in Mail selecting:Tools|Import. That should bring in all mail related files. I have, never done it that way, but it should work.

I dont understand why they didnt fine the files to import into the newer version. I have been using seamonkey for years and every update always imported all emails and bookmarks automaticaly.

This version seems to have not had that option.

As for copying the files, I would need to have both version up and running to cut and drag from one version to another, RIGHT?

Hello Larry,

LARRYB wrote:I just tried to run V2.0.5 over my seamonkey V1.1.18. After reading the installation guide, nowhere was there any mention of deleting the older version first.

By default, SeaMonkey 2 is installed into a different location than SeaMonkey 1, both the program files and the profiles. It is essential, therefore, that no attempt is made to install SM 2 into the same location as SM 1!

If SM 2 is installed into the same location as SM 1, any subsequent attempt to re-install SM 2 will fail to import your data from SM 1, due to the presence of the SM 2 Profile.

When installing SM 2 into its default location, you should be presented with the opportunity to import all your data from SM 1.

I would suggest doing the following:

1. Make SM 1 your default browser, if it isn't already. Some people have found that doing so can alleviate problems that may occur.

2. Ensure that all SeaMonkey applications, especially SM 1's Quick Launch, are closed.

3. Find the SM 2 profile, which should be located here:

C:\Documents and Settings\<Your Windows User Name>\Application Data\Mozilla\SeaMonkey\Profiles\xxxxxxxx.default

Where xxxxxxxx is a random 8 character string.

4. In the above path, delete the folder SeaMonkey and all its sub-folders.

5. Re-install SM 2, letting it install into its default location.

6. When prompted to import your user data, do so.

7. When the installation has finished, run SM 2 and you should have a working SM 2 complete with all your data.

SM 1 will still be on your computer, you can either uninstall it or leave it, provided you don't try to run both SM 1 and SM 2 simultaneously. ;)

NOTE.

Currently, SM 2 only imports the default Profile. If you have more than one profile, you will have to import the others manually. See Manual Profile Migration

For reference, the SeaMonkey 1 and 2 Program files are located here:

SM 1:

C:\ Program Files\mozilla.org\SeaMonkey

SM 2:

C:\ Program Files\SeaMonkey

And the SM 1 Profile is located here:

C:\Documents and Settings\<Your Windows User Name>\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\Default\xxxxxxxx.slt

Where xxxxxxxx is a random 8 character string.

I hope the above is of some help.

Regards,

Dave.
