SeaMonkey 1.0.3

Postby richard mitnick » Thu 27 Jul, 2006 5:48 am

Seamonkey 1.0.3 is released and should be noted at Sillydog.

Also, while Firefox now allows a simple quick update process, Seamonkey still requires the un-installation of the older version prior to the installation of the newer version. This needs to be fixed.

Thanks Richard,

SeaMonkey Council has released SeaMonkey 1.0.3. What's new:

* Improved stability
* Several security fixes
* A bug was introduced in SeaMonkey 1.0.2 that sometimes caused the URL bar to stop working properly when switching tabs. This has been fixed. (Bug 332874)
* If you have more bookmarks on your personal toolbar than there is space for, the ">>" overflow icon will now display more reliably (Bug 338803)
* If you choose to update SeaMonkey when it notifies you that an update is available, the update page will load in a more useful browser window (with navigation buttons and toolbars) (Bug 334903)

This update is due to security vulnerabilities. See this thread:

Antony top links are from a Swedish website, the lower links lead to a general mozilla download.
The .se location may be fine, and I did not try it.

Installation went smoothly. and, for a change the GRE folder of 1.0.2 was removed by uninstalling. I had just deleted two older GRE folders which had been left behind by previous versions (but, they did not affect the existing installation).

Egad, you guys-

First, I am credited with an announcement, and then, I find myself in the big time on the main page. That is worth a contribution, which I shall no go ahead and make.

Having followed the posts re: 1.0.3, I downloaded the
installation file. I first uninstalled 1.0.2, rebooted, and
then installed 1.0.3. It would not connect to the net for mail,
news, nor web. OBTW - IE works jes' fine. So I am still connected.

Tried disabling all firewalls. Still no joy.

So I uninstalled 1.0.3 and then reinstalled 1.0.2 and
HERE I AM!

Why is that? What might have gone astray? 2 works fine, 3
will not connect. Hmmmm. Maybe I don't need 1.0.3??

What would have kept 1.0.3 from connecting while IE and SM
1.0.2 works great.

Seamonkey 1.0.3

Postby richard mitnick » Thu 27 Jul, 2006 7:13 pm

Hi Chuck,

Welcome to the bunch. I hope you get some help here, because keeping Seamonkey up to date for security is important. And, for lazy folks like me, tabbed browsing and saved user id's and passwords are just the best.

BTW, try to keep it simple, skip the cute stuff, there is not a lot of it here; that is over at the Mozillazine boards.

Your friend,

Chuck,
I have no idea what the problem is, but let me tell you what I did. I uninstalled via Add/Remove SM1.0.2, without removing remaining files. I, then installed SM1.0.3. I have several browsers, and, to keep them honest, I use a different profile for each one. I had been using the same profile for SM1.0.2 as I had for mozilla1.7.12. In fact, it is named Moz1.7.12. SM1.0.3 picked up the same profile, and along with it all Mail accounts. Nothing has been changed in the settings, and I get seven accounts. The set up is: C:\Program Files\mozilla.org\SeaMonkey\seamonkey.exe -p Moz1.7.12, which allows me to open the desired profile.
And, I am trying to be "cute" using an oddball Theme, plus sevcn extentions.Everything is completely compatible. I have a cable connection, so I had to do nothing after the installation. The entire operation took me about one minute, including the download.

Tell me more about how you identify the profiles used by these programs.

I looked in Documents and Settings and the Mozilla/Profiles folder is
empty. From where does SM get the info about each user??

I keep all my user stuff (mail/news/abook/bookmarks) in a folder structure
on my D: drive in a Netscape7 folder. How does SM find that structure? Is
this from the Registry or from a profile file somewhere??

In WinXP, profiles for Netscape, Mozilla or Seamonkey are located in a C:/ drive location, and, are hidden, as well.
Of course only the default profile needs to be there. I don't have D drive, but I created a Moz profiles folder, and, any new profile has been directed there. The point is not so much to see the folders on the hard drive, but to see if you get anything in the Profile Manager. first. You should have a "default" profile in default location. But, you will not get to a new profile automatically. I, still, don't understand why 1.0.2 works, and 1.0.3 does not.
I have noticed only one potential problem, when the GRE folders were not uninstalled when I uninstalled earlier versions. This could cause problems, but the 1.8.0.4 folder in C:/Program Files/Common Files/mozilla.org/GRE was removing by uninstalling SM1.0.2. I have now only the 1.8.0.5 GRE folder of SM1.0.3. Should you still have the old GRE, it should be deleted after uninstalling 1.0.2.
But, if you are using a different drive, you may have to chase around the folders which may still install elsewhere.

Ah, solved the problem.

Seems like, even though I had discontinued use of
ZoneAlarm some time ago, a background "service"
was still running and blocked SM 1.0.3 outgoing.

I started ZoneAlarm in the foreground, allowed SM 1.0.3 and
all is well.

Who woulda thunk??

thanks for your patience

seamonkey 1.0.3

Postby richard mitnick » Fri 28 Jul, 2006 1:16 pm

Well, I finally found a teeny tiny gripe:

The extention IETab did not follow along in the new installation, on either of my computers. No big deal, I just went and got a new installation.

I just wanted to advise anyoine else who had the problem.
