SeaMonkey 2.1 is released

Postby richard mitnick » Fri 10 Jun, 2011 5:42 pm

Released into the wild. I will need to wait and see if Roboform updates their .xpi. Also, only the depressing default theme.

Richard,
it is not a hopeless situation. I, actually, had been following the development of 2.1, and had created a separate profile. I was not interested in excotic Themes, or Roboform, but had some incompatible extentions.
So, I relied on Nightly Tester Tools, checking the Force Addon Compatibility line.
I had two incompatible extentions. One was IE Tab Plus, which did not show up, and the other was the Prefbar, which did. There was no visible Home button, using the Toy Factory Theme., but I found out the the first button to the left of the Bookmarks Toolbar was blank, but active, so why bother with blah Themes. The IE Tab Plus button came to life came to life by Customizing the Menu Bar. The Search button was invisible, but, again, I got it by drag and drop from the Customize list. So far, so good.
I have not removed 2.0.14, in case the use of a foreign version with an old version may mess it up.

Hi Fulvio-

How are you. You know, the default themes are just dreadful, too dark. And I really do rely quite heavily on Roboform for my blogs. We only recently got Roboform for 2.0, so, you know, it will be a dog's age until we see it for 2.1.

But, I am fine with 2.0.X until someone says it is not secure. I got great help from the people at Mozillazine forums for three issues in SM relating to my blogs, one having to do with saving new bookmarks, use File bookmark instead of Save bookmark so that I do not then need to move it; Copy image copies the image and the URL for the image and I need both function; and finally, a line that will have a new tab open just to the right of the tab for the page on which I clicked a link. They got rid of three severe irritations for me, so I am in good shape. I can afford to wait.

Again, until someone says do not wait.

I hope you are having good weather and taking full advantage of it.

One of the first things I noticed was the reference to Firefox in the new UA string.

Edward-

You know, I don't really follow the stuff about branches and twigs, etc., as relates to Gecko. But some time ago, I remember reading that SM was not going to be able to follow FF to whatever the next branch or twig was going to be.

So, I am heartened that SM does seem to be getting the advantage of whatever Gecko has to offer. I want to see SM stick around.

I removed 2.0.14, and as I said in my original post, I am using nightly tester tools to by-pass incompatibility of extentions and themes. My 2.1 is no different than 2.0.14.

I suspect that they added the Firefox info to the UA string to allow the suite to access sites that previously blocked it, thinking SM was something other than Firefox, Safari, Chrome or Internet Explorer. Comcast's main web site previously blocked SeaMonkey in this regard, but with the Firefox info in there, the site comes right up.

Very good point, because I had 2.0.14 and 2.1, and 2.0.14 was not accepted at some sites, while 2.1 is.
One point which must have not been missed by others is that memory usage of SM2.1, with both browser and mail open has not exceeded 122 MB, while Firefox+Thunderbird used over 150 MB.

Geeze, I have yet to find a site that does not work on 2.0.14.

I have to correct myself. I ran into a few sites which did not accept 2.0.x and 1.0.x, and offered to download either Firefox or Internet Explorer. I have no way to test if comcast.com is one of those, since I removed 2.0.14.

Comcast's main site http://www.comcast.net/ is one of those. Will not work with SM 2.0.x but will work with 2.1, because of the Firefox reference in the UA string.

Because the site doesn't recognize Iceape (Debian-rebranded SeaMonkey), the above page displays a "browser upgrade" page instead.
