Security updates fail to install, again

Postby Fulvio » Tue 21 Jun, 2011 1:21 pm

I reported, in March, that I had problems installing Windows Security Updates. Sine then, this problem happened every time, and, doing a Search, I found that it is a prevalent issue. So far, my updates download, ok, but they fail to install. And, as I reported earlier, the install only after the machine shutdown. So far, I had nine updates, and then one more, and a few days ago that there were two Windows Framework updates. One of them may have attempted, but not succeeded to update, properly. I cannot do any update manually. I, even, changed to Automatic Updates, but I did not see that it was set to update every day at 3:00 AM, when my computer is turned off.
I contacted Windows Updates support, and got no useful hint.
Is anyone else having problems, or do you know that installs do not take place?

Man, I don't know what to tell you, Fulvio. I have mine set to update automatically and they always do whenever updates arrive. Just before I shut down my computer, it tells me that an update(s) will be applied and then the computer will turn itself off. It's pretty much always worked this way. The truth is... if I had to do it manually, I probably would forget or couldn't be bothered. So... I just let Windows do its thing. I know... some believe they need to examine what is going to be updated, but as I've said in the past: if Microsoft believe this needs to be applied, who am I to suggest otherwise. And over the years there has never been a problem so why mess with it?

Anyway, I hope you get this sorted out. Critical updates are important.

I am not likely to forget, because Secunia tells me when any program is outdated.
The first eleven updates were applied as you mentioned, on shutdown. But two updates to Microsoft.NET Framework did not appear to have been installed.
However, I could care less about Microsoft.NET.

An additional comment. I would not believe that Windows Automatic Updates works. Only going to Windows Updates, and scanning for updates gives me a kind of assurance. But, if Secunia PSI tells me that I have insecure updates, Windows Updates tells me that updates failed to install, and a lot more tells me that Windows Updates is full of air.
I contacted, personally, a tech, and got no help. A Search in the Windows Updates page came up empty. What can one feel? If there is a problem, it may go away, but I will not be feeling secure as long as I have Win XP-SP3.

I have not gotten any input from Microsoft Updates, but, doing a Search, I was able to download the KB as ND2OP2.blahblah.exe and the 3.5 equivalent. It took a while, but the updates were installed, which goes to show you how much you can trust Microsoft Automatic Updates
