Sending Email Using Thunderbird Problem - SMTP

Postby humpd » Thu 15 Jul, 2010 4:24 pm

Suddenly, just this afternoon, and after a Thunderbird update, I can no longer send email using Thunderbird. This is the error message I get: "Sending of message failed.
The message could not be sent because the connection to SMTP server smtp.att.yahoo.com timed out. Try again or contact your network administrator."

I checked my SMTP account information and all is as it should be. SBC Yahoo does not support Thunderbird (or SeaMonkey for that matter) with their tech support so that option is not available. Can anyone give me some advice on how to solve this problem? By the way, I checked my wife's Thunderbird profile and she cannot send mail using TB either so either something changed since yesterday at SBC Yahoo or something changed in TB.

Windows 7, Norton Internet Security, Malwarebytes, Spywareblaster for my desktop and Avast for the laptop, user of Chrome and Firefox 9.01.

This sounds like it could be a problem on SBC Yahoo's end. Do you know what port that you're trying connect on? I was able to connect to it on ports 25 and 587, but not 465.

I looked at different sources, and it looks to me that the settings have not changed since 2007. SMTP should use port 465, SSL.

I am currently using port 465 per SBC Yahoo's security requirements. I tried port 25 with no success but will try port 587 as suggested here. I will post back if that does not work.

Well, I just tried again to send an email without changing any settings and it worked! I have no idea why other than possibly it WAS a problem on SBC's end. Thanks for the recommendations.

It is difficult to find the main problem happen in your email using the thunderbird. But what kind of connection you are using it is port 25 or 587. I am not sure for the port connection, my friend tells me about these so I don’t have any experience like this.

By the way, I do not see any listing of the Thunderbird version. I don't have that IP, but I know a fellow who has it, and I can check with him.
The reason why I asked which version Thunderbird, is because the new versions, such as 3.1.7 "guess" the server, and, often make some serious mistake. For instance, I have a server which is regionally identified, such as: smtp.east.cox.net, but the new Thunderbird guesses that it is without the regional id, entering automatically, smtp.cox.net, or mail.cox.net, or, one case imap.cox.net(or even .com). I have had some real problem in correcting the server, because only the regional identification works. So, make sure that the setting is ok, if you use the newer versions.
