Postby RB2D2 » Fri 04 Apr, 2008 1:39 pm

Can someone please tell me why I can't install Session Manager add-on for SeaMonkey 0.6.1.13 here

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/seamonkey/addon/2324

when it attempts to install I get the message "Install script not found"

Thank you for any help

The add-ons from Mozilla's Add-On site don't usually work. The file has to be
Code: Select all
.xpi
as opposed to
Code: Select all
.jar
in order for SM to process it. Try using Google and searching for SM add-ons somewhere other than Mozilla.

One place I read that you need crashrecovery installed first before the download will work.

Found and downloaded crashrecovery.xpi. I opened that and it contained

chrome.manifest
install.js
install.rdf
license.txt

and three folders:

chrome
components
defaults

Anybody know what I'm to do with this mess? Or was I suppose to extract the .xpi contents to the SeaMonkey directory? Seems they could at least tell you how to install it since it's not self installing.

It is not that bad! Relax!
In case the desired add-on does not work, and it says that it is compatible with the version, contact the author. I have had answers ranging from a new version to an explanation why the critter does not work.
0.6.1.13 is the add-on version number, and the page is not informative. It says for Seamonkey, but all references made, in reviews, and otherwise, mention Firefox. The file name is session_manager-0.6.1.13-fx.xpi , indicating that it is for Firefox, and not Seamonkey. I could not find a person who said that it worked with Seamonkey.

I didn't even think to tell you to check and see if the version numbers were compatiable.

There are three kinds of add-ons, AFAIK. One kind will look for the version, but it will be usable by means of add-ons like nightly tester tools or Mr Tech Local Install. I am using a number of add-ons which are not compatible, this way. But, there are others where this trick is defeated, by something in th UI. The add-on is installed, but it does not work properly.
Finally, there are add-ons which simply can't be installed. There is nothing which you can do if the add-on is not made for that kind of program. I have had this experience with Navigator9.0.0.6 which could not install add-ons made for Firefox. Some add-ons are made for a wide range of programs. This Session Manager is, definitely, not made for Seamonkey.
It says nowhere in the page that the add-on is for any specific program. This is poor!

OK, for now let's forget about Session Manager. What about Crash Recovery? Says it's for SeaMonkey
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
http://sessionmanager.mozdev.org/crashrecovery/
Latest release: Crash Recovery 0.6.10 (changelog, contributors)
This release works for Firefox 1.5, SeaMonkey 1.0 and Flock 0.5.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

I downloaded it to a folder and unzipped. Now I don't know what to do with the files and folders, see my post above. Can anyone tell me what to do next?

RB2D2,

You need to install an earlier version of SessionManager compatible with SeaMonkey. Try version 0.4.3 from here:

http://downloads.mozdev.org/sessionmanager

SessionManager and CrashRecovery both install the same way - just drag and drop the .xpi file on an open window and follow the prompts.

Finally, after wandering around the crashrecovery website website, I saw this:
Versions 0.5.1 and higher only work for Firefox 2.0 and above as well as other browsers based on Firefox 2.0+. Use 0.4.3 for Firefox 1.5, Flock 0.5 and SeaMonkey 1.0

This is not what was said at the sessionmanager site.

Hey Charlie! Thanks for the instructions on installing .xpi file, that was neat the way that worked. Install of CrashRecovery went without a hitch, said installation was successful. Is it now suppose to show up anywhere in the menus? There IS a crashrecovery.jar file in the Chrome folder.

Now to go see about the SessionManger.

The install of SessionManager went great! It's in my Tools. I had it to install in Browser directory rather than Profile directory, was that right?

Thanks Charlie, you're a sweetheart!!

Did you have to install in the browser directory? Usually, one get the option to install in either browser or profile. I prefer the profile, because I may want to use the profile once I uninstall the present version, and try to use a new version. Of course, the extention may not be compatible, but, it is usually no big deal.

No I didn't have to install in the browser directory, I was given a choice but I wasn't sure which to choose. I ended up choosing browser directory. Usually when you install a new version of SeaMonkey it tells you the 3rd party extenions and add ons won't be included. I know the icons I have never are, I have to reinstall them.

Basically, if you install in the browser, and a new version comes along, and you uninstall the older version, the extention is gone. If you install in the profile, and the extention is good, nothing to worry. f the extention is not compatible, and you have the extention uninstaller and its .xpi, you can uninstall your incompatible extention from Tools|Extention uninstaller.
I can't remember when it was necessary to do this with Seamonkey, and, I have v.1.1.9, the latest one. I have had to do this with 2.0 nightly, which does not need the extention uninstaller, as its extention manager is just like that of Firefox. But, all I had to do was uninstall a single extention, and not have to uninstall/install eight others.
