Setting default browser in Linux . . .

Postby DJGM » Sat 30 Oct, 2004 9:49 am

I've installed Mandrake Linux 10.1 Community Edition on my main PC as a stopgap Linux OS to use
between now and when I get SUSE Linux 9.2 installed on it sometime next month. I want to set the
copy of the Mozilla App-Suite 1.7.3 I've installed as the default browser on this version of Linux.

What's the best (and preferably the quickest) way to do this? At the moment, the default is the copy
of Mozilla App-Suite 1.7.2 that came bundled with the OS. When I click on something that fires up a
browser to display a webpage, it opens up the bundled Mozilla 1.7.2, even if I've already got my
installation of Mozilla 1.7.3 up and running, with the Profile that's already in use in Mozilla 1.7.3.
Obviously I can't the same Profile with 2 seperate installations of Mozilla simultaneously, and I
don't want to create a new profile, unless I decide to install the Linux version of Netscape 7.2.

I should point out, that I've installed Mozilla App-Suite in a subfolder within my /home/djgm/
directory, as opposed to the default location suggested by the Mozilla installer. This is more
of a personal preference, and makes it easier for me to install extensions using XPI's.
UserAgent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.7.3) Gecko/20040916
SeaMonkey = Swiss Army Knife: It's versatile, reliable, and contains useful tools.
Windows Internet Explorer = Old Swiss Cheese: Full of holes, and it stinks!

Check target of symbolic link mozilla located in /usr/bin/ directory.
You can do it with Midnight Commander, type mc in a terminal

If you are in KDE, try Kontrol Panel, Set Default Application.
