Setting up my own network

I want to set up my own home, wired, network. I currently have a wireless one which was pretty easy.

The main questions I have are:

I already have a router, can I get a 100ft Ethernet cable, and a switch, to get Ethernet in my room?

It depends on what sort of networking you want to have.

If you already have a router (assuming it has more than one port for output), you pretty much do not need a switch. When getting an ethernet cable, get a Cat 5e at least (Cat 6 is even better), remember to put route ethernet cable around the edge of the wall and secure the cable for safety reason.

I did this back in 2005 with pretty much the exact same components you listed. As long as your wireless router has an Ethernet bridge, you should be all set.

Though Antony's aesthetic concerns are realistic, I chose to run the cable over window and door frames, then finally ran it underneath the door to my bedroom so that it would still close. It might look ugly, but works just as well if you don't feel like using wall clamps.

I'm not sure if my wireless router has an Ethernet bridge, I'll have to look into that.

And I plan on running it from the office (room right next to mine) along the wall and tucked into the carpet, and under my door.

How can I find out if my router supports Ethernet bridging? I know it's a Netgear WGR614v9. But I may upgrade to the (still wireless G) WRT54GL. As that can be flashed with DD-WRT. My current router is still a work in progress.

Typically the presence of an Ethernet switch on the back of the router is a good enough indicator that you have an Ethernet bridge between the wireless and wired interfaces.

In creating a good wireless connection like in room you must consider what kind of router you will use. For me, I would suggest to you about choosing Cisco Linksys E3000. One the easiest wireless device you can use.
