Sharing with Mozilla 1.2 & Netscape 7

Postby profman » Sun 01 Dec, 2002 4:15 pm

I saw on a newsgroup that it was possible to share one set of bookmarks and your Mail/News between Mozilla and Netscape even though you are using separate profiles (as I am). I'd like to do this so that I could get into the habit of using Mozilla 1.2 more.

Is there a downside to this sharing?

BTW: The only downside I've noticed so far to having both Mozilla and Netscape is that they seem to be stealing the "default browser" status from each other.

I know it can be done very easily on Linux by using symbolic links to the files... not sure how one would manage this in Windows though.

You could point the mail folders to the same location for both profiles, but aside from copying the bookmarks, I don't know how you'd keep them in sync :)

I saw the NG post too, profman:
The correct "prefs.js" or "users.js" syntax should be as follows:

user_pref("browser.bookmarks.file",
"<drive>:\\<folder-path>\\bookmarks.html");

Notes:

<drive> = hard-disk drive-letter

<folder-path> = folder location where the "bookmarks.html" file is located

A double back-slash (\\) is used to separate elements in the path statement.

Moving the "bookmarks.html" file to an alternate location could
facilitate its' shared use by all, but you are cautioned about learn
about shared rights document management before attempting to do so.

user_pref("browser.bookmarks.file", "<drive>\\<folder.path>\\bookmarks.html");

profman,

If you try the "share" workaround, let us know what you think.

Ramona, I some times have trouble finding (or re-finding) posts in News Groups and can not locate the one quoted by you (perhaps you could be so kind as to tell me where it is located just to satisfy my curiosity):-). The actual note I saw was located in the netscape.netscape7.windows Newsgroup at:

snews://secnews.netscape.com:563/as3cb5 ... tscape.com

This post has the same info as the note you (Ramona) quoted. This post says:

Netscape and Mozilla shouldn't share profiles, but you can most
certainly have those profiles share files. :-)

Bookmarks: add this to your user.js and edit it appropriately.
user_pref("browser.bookmarks.file", "C:\\ ... \\bookmarks.html");

Mail/news: Go to Edit | Mail & Newsgroups Account Settings | <account
name> | Server Settings. Change the "Local Directory" field to direct it
to other profile.
-- Chris I

I probably will eventually try this. I will certainly report back if I do.

Hi profman,

Sorry you have trouble finding those threads that I post. This time I didn't post the link because I couldn't get it to work, so removed it before posting:roll: Now I can't find the post... :roll: I'm really sorry about that. This is the link that I copied, but doesn't work:

Cheers!

I did it. I now share Mail\News and Bookmarks between Netscape 7.00 and Mozilla 1.2.1. It wasn't without a bit of trouble and work.

I first worked on changing the Mail\News to be in common since this seemed to be the easiest to do (ha!). [I may have mis-interpreted how many changes need to be made.] I decided to change all pointers in Mozilla Mail\News preferences to match that of Netscape 7 (did I have to do all that?). I had trouble here, and decided that the account names in Mozilla should match those in Netscape. I also, eventually, decided that I should close and restart Mozilla after I overhauled each Mail or News account. I got the Mail to work, but Mozilla froze solid while I worked on the News accounts. Mozilla thereafter froze every time I tried to open Mail/News, and this made further editing of preferences impossible.

I deleted the troubled Mozilla profile, choosing the option to delete all data files. It deleted the profile's directory, but, thankfully, did not delete any files in my default Netscape profile (which was backed up, just in case).

I proceeded to build a new Mozilla profile from scratch. This time, I created each new News or Mail account by copying and pasting items found in Netscape's preferences (you could get confused doing all this copying and pasting; I did.). I did this for all names and paths found in the preferences for each Mail and News account. After editing each account, I would first close Netscape and then close and re-start Mozilla. Voila! It would appear that all the desired newsgroups and mail are shared between the two browsers. (There should be an easier way.)

The bookmarks sharing was easier after I really realize that all "\" in the path had to be replaced with "\\" or things would not work. The line in my user.js for my Mozilla profile now looks something like the line below (really one, big, long line):

user_pref("browser.bookmarks.file", "C:\\WINDOWS\\Application Data\\Mozilla\\Profiles\\Nutcase's Account\\9gxilhof.slt\\bookmarks.html");

This points the Mozilla profile to my Netscape's bookmarks file.

I'll let you know if things get gunked up later since I just made the change an hour or two ago. BTW, depending on what you do with Netscape, it might be a good idea NOT to have the mozilla registry.dat Read Only.

Remember, I did this on only one machine so far. My procedure may not be the best. You need to be cautious when making these kind of changes, although the bookmarks thing was pretty easy.
