Should I make the switch?

Postby caylac » Sun 05 Jul, 2009 1:40 pm

I've been with Netscape since I can't remember when.
I've been having Netscape 9 ever since it came out and have never used IE really. I can't even get that to work on my computer.
I dislike changes basically, but I know Netscape sort of vanished.
And now AT&T is telling me they're getting ready to force a new home page on me.

So-o-o, should I go on and make the switch to Firefox 3.5 and go ahead and voluntarily switch over to the new home page and do it all at the same time? Netscape has served me very well.

My computer is newish, Vista, AT&T 6.0 DSL.

Guess I'm skittish about losing stuff. Bad enough I've been gradually losing my mind.

Any advise would be appreciated. Thanks

Love and Peace

Hi caylac and welcome to SillyDog701!

My father was also a long-time Netscape user. I remember he had Netscape 2.0 loaded on his 386 way back in the mid-'90s, back when it was the Next Big Thing. More recently his bank started considering Netscape 7.2 to be a "non-safe browser" and wouldn't let him view his account details with it, so I helped him upgrade to Mozilla Seamonkey and he hasn't been able to tell the difference.

Moral of the story is that you're probably going to have to upgrade sooner or later, whether some website stops supporting it or the browser eventually just won't be up to par with the competition, so you might as well do it sooner than later. Netscape 9 and Firefox aren't all that different, so there isn't much of a learning curve when going from one to the other.

Hi guys,

If you do upgrade, there's two ways you can transfer all your favourites, profile and everything:

1. You can install Firefox alongside Netscape Navigator, and the Import wizard on first run of Firefox will allow you to import from Navigator.

2. I'm sure the well known MozBackup will work with Netscape 9 too, as it was built on Firefox, NN9 was basically a rebranded Firefox, but I haven't tested it. You can then import this backup into Firefox using MozBackup's Restore feature.

Whichever route you choose, you can then uninstall Netscape, or keep it for sentimental value :). The Import route is the quickest though, so I recommend that.

Good luck!

Don pretty well nailed it. He could have gone farther: NN9 is just a recompiling of the code which comprises FF, so NN9 really is no different.

When you load FF3.5, you will be at home.

The one thing I found missing was the "X" tab with a single tab opened. If you go to
http://sillydog.org/forum/sdt_15851.php , I have posted the fix for that.
