Showing UserAgent string along your posts?

Postby Antony » Mon 02 Sep, 2002 4:41 am

EDITED.
Voting period has ended.

Original message:
Hello all,

Do you want to bring back the famous displaying of useragent string alongside your posts?

:ns7: :ns: :moz: :ie:
The useragent is somehting like
Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.0.1) Gecko/20020823 Netscape/7.0
It can be used to identify the browser you used while making the post.
(it is possible to fake it, though.) It will not be used for identifying your physical location, or used for discrimation.

I vote a hearty YES! For one simple reason. If someone posts a question that is rather generic in nature and forgets to mention what platform they are using...well, there you go 8)

I'll vote yes, but then you'll know how infrequently I upgrade my builds ;)

I use every browser ever created, so I have to be careful to specify what I am talking about. I am using an AOLBeta now.
And, Mr.Tinkles, what happened to the cat?

I just like a bit of variety in my avatars. I'll cycle through that cat pic again eventually.

UserAgent Spoofing

Postby Antony » Thu 05 Sep, 2002 12:49 am

The useragent string would show the browser and the operating system you are using. I recommend you leave it intact for the best preference and the server detection. Detecting browser's UA is something very useful for web developers, particularlly if they want to give users the best output/functions and support the strength of each browser.

The useragent can be easily spoofed.
Such as
Mozilla/Gecko 1.5.9.0 (Windoze; U; Windoze NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.5.9.0) Gecko/20032011 Netscape/Netscape7.2.1.0b3 (CCK - DJGM-i)
It was clearly spoofed. (Taken from old forum).

It is very easy to change the browser's useragent string in Netscape 7. My recommendation: Not fun, don't do it.

More more information, you might want to read the post in the old forum

Being a cat, which automatically implies superiority to you humans as well as being your lawful sovereign, I find it distressing that I cannot vote multiple times. Rectify this situation immediately or you'll be finding used kitty litter in your food

For those who haven't voted, please cast your vote now.

All human, cats and other animals (including those live in aquarium) are equal in SillyDog. That is one vote per (person/cat/animal).

Bring it back.

I found it to be helpful while figuring out Moz/NS problems.

There is nothing which can be done now. I actually wanted to say maybe today, but not tomorrow, but there was no such option. :?

It is interested to know that people are interested in this unique SillyDog701 feature.
It has been discussed in MozillaZine forums, also this thread.
And Wellander requested this feature in phpBB.com.

Our useragent string thread for show case!

EDITed, add some more links.
