shut down problem

Postby Rebecca » Wed 30 Apr, 2003 11:11 pm

I can't seem to get my computer to shut down completely using the start menu. It hangs up on a screen that says "Windows is Shutting Down". I am using Windows 98, compaq presario 5000 series, 600mhz Intel celeron processor, and NS 7.02 streamline.
Thanks. Rebecca

Get this update from MS http://www.microsoft.com/windows98/downloads/contents/WURecommended/S_WUFeatured/Win98SE/Default.asp - at the time they touted Win98 as reliable

Hey, no problem :) I'd keep a copy of that update on your machine, just in case Windows decides to play up again.

Interesting. I never had a problem with Win 98 not shutting down properly, since I started checking the "disable fast shutdown" in Advanced after typing in msconfig from Start|Run. But, at work, the 98SE behaved exactly as described the first day I got it, and the update fixed the problem.

I recently had the same problem, stuck on the Windows Is Shutting Down screen.

Upon checking the tech support forum of the company who distributed the card, they list recommended video-related settings in the BIOS for a completely different problem.

Had nothing to lose, so I changed the video settings in the BIOS according to what they recommended, and I now get the "It's now safe to turn off your computer." message. :)

Didn't have to download anything from MS either...

But Windows should automatically shutdown, by itself. That patch corrects that issue. Or, if you are like me, this computer never goes off :) I've gotten some very impressive uptime from Windows 2000 and XP.

Well, shut down is a problem again. The patch worked the first couple times, but now its hanging up on "windows is shutting down" again.
I went to start/run and typed in misconf as per favio's post, but I could not find a line that said " disable fast shutdown".
What do i do now? Re-install patch? Thanks. Rebecca.

My apologies Rebecca :(

Reinstall the update, and also look at these other two updates offered by Microsoft:

Start|Run type mcconfig .Click on Advanced button. This is on the right lower end of the System Configuration Utility screen which pops up. Another screen will popup, called advanced troubleshooting utility. Disable fast shutdown is the third line from the bottom. Don't mess with the other lines, please.

I've followed your directions. But third line from bottom on my advanced troubleshooting utility screen is "limit memory to (blank) MB. There is no option which says "disable fast shutdown".
I am using Window 98.
Won't touch any other options unless I hear different from you. Do you want me to list choices for you? Thanks much.

Rebecca,

It might help to provide us with a screengrab rather than a list . . .

Sorry. Don't know how to do a screen grab.

We must be having a different variety of Win98. That screen has 12 entries, and Disable fast shutdown is beneath the limit memory line.
Just to place it some more: Disable UDF file system is below, and Disable Scandisk after bad shutdown is above the limit memory to...

Yep. Sure enough. My version has 11 entries and does not include "disable fast shutdown". Hmmmm. Anything else I might try to keep this patch working? I reinstalled, and once more can shut down this machine. But for how long or how many times....we don't know.
