SillyDog701 was offline 29.5.2004

Postby Antony » Fri 28 May, 2004 9:58 pm

In the last 12 hours or so, SillyDog701 was inaccessible.

I lost complete access myself.

My first response was calling my hosting company. I should have talked to them a bit longer, but it was mid night my time, and I did not have a good week due to other issues.

They fixed it on 7:35AM (AEST), but then only half of the problem. The main SillyDog701 was still not accessible.

I called the company again, and they found the problem and fixed it. However, they have no idea what caused that.

I apologise for any inconvenience due to the down time.

If there's FreeBSD or Linux expert who can help me on server settings, please contact me privately.

That's odd...I wonder what the problem was? The good news is, it's fixed now :D

Thanks for keeping us updated on the situation, Antony :)

More often?

It could be my Internet connection, but it seems like SillyDog is down for me a whole lot. At least once a week, it seems. (Yes, I know I joined the fourm only a few weeks ago but I have been browsing around the site for quite awhile).

I did a few traceroutes, and during the outage, they all ended at whom I believed was the provider for Antony's hosting company, in which it would seem that all web sites hosted by the same company were unreachable during that time.

Well, that was not the case this time.

All other websites were on during that period. (Except the domains/websites hosted in the same machine.) The connection between my hosting company outside world had no problems during that period of time.

As I still have no idea what caused this, but the server (machine) was halt, and they (hosting company) rebooted it and re-compiled the kernel.

SillyDog701 strive to provide a better website for all users, SillyDog701 is hosted in dedicated server. Here's how you can help SillyDog701.

Additional Information

Additional information.

When the technician recompiled the kernel, he commented out two (internal) IP addresses used by sillydog.org. That results the server was on actually but not to outside the world. And was fixed in few hours later.

I noticed that as well, it was usually during my late evening hours (AEST), the server would become very slow for no good reason. Perhaps some scripts running at background that I was not aware of. Usually that lasts for less than 10 minutes.

Again, I am calling for help. If there's any Linux/FreeBSD experts, please contact me privately.
