Since 7.01 has Popup Control, is adblocker.xpi needed too?

Postby jwouellette » Tue 31 Dec, 2002 12:21 pm

I have Netscape 7.01 standalone which now includes "Popup Window Controls" in the preference settings. So my question is, should I install the adblocker.xpi file also? Maybe someone could explain what the differences and/or similarities are? I know I'm a little confused! Thanks for the help everyone.

You, not only, do not need athe adblocker file, but I think that 7.01 will override it, anyway. This is happening with my Popup control from the prefbar. If you take a look at the Privacy/Popup Windowl preferences, you will find that some site are pre-allowed popups, and you may not agree with those selections. And, you may allow some exception (some banks require popups). The adblocker file gave an all-or-none control, while the 7.01 control can be taylored to your wishes.
And, do not expect to see any warning. They do not work. I suppose that they are a declaration of intention from Netscape to have them work in a future version.

Yes and no. Indeed, the new popup window controls in Netscape 7.01 make
the adblocker.xpi file partially redundant, except for the fact that it can still
be used to block most adbanners. It can't Flash and Java based adbanners,
but that's where BannerBlind comes in useful, as that can be set to hide or
even remove adbanners of various sizes from webpages. Although when
it's set to remove adbanners, BannerBlind can cause the layout of some
websites to suffer. At the end of the day, it's up to you. If you only want
to stop unrequested poups from appearing, then you no longer need
the adblocker.xpi add-on. If you want to block animated gif based
banners, install adblocker.xpi. If you want to eliminate adbanners
made with Flash and/or Java, get the BannerBlind add-on as well.

Thanks Fulvio and DJGM. Your explanations helped alot. I think I'll install adblocker and see how it goes. And thanks for the headsup about BannerBlind too. I'll have to investigate that one further. Thanks again.
