Skype app for iPhone

According to Cnet News.com, the free Skype for iPhone will finally be available to download from the iTunes App Store sometime on Tuesday (31 March 2009).

According to Cnet, Skype app (for iPhone) looks more like a regular iPhone app than it does Skype 4.0 for Windows. For many of us already prefer Apple's sleek interface archetype, this is a triumph.

Some features about Skype app on iPhone:
Calls on Skype for iPhone work only if you're in range of a Wi-Fi network, so your call quality will in part be at the mercy and strength of wireless networks nearby--calls will not work over the cell phone network on the iPhone (but chatting will.) Assuming your connection is solid, you can dial a number or quickly call a contacts stored in your address book. iPod Touch users will need earphones with an embedded mic to talk.

Just wait until Tuesday, and you can download Skype app from iTunes App Store.

Do you know if the iPhone Skype client addresses multitasking, or do you need to keep the Skype app open to receive Skype calls?

If my understanding is correct, that feature is supported in [sdt=15584]iPhone OS 3.0[/sdt]

One reason to unlock your iPhone 3G and take it to Three (if you're in Australia), as you can add an "X-Series" cap to your plan. These plans start at $5/mth but each plan gives you 4000 minutes of free Skype minutes.

I don't know if they do it anymore, but since Apple did not allow Three to carry the iPhone 3G, they would give you a $300AUD credit to your bill to take your iPhone 3G to them.

Alas, they only have coverage in major Australian cities, but:
- They signed an agreement last year to roam on Telstras NextG (850Mhz 3G) network instead of its slowly dying 2G network (although it costs to use data)
- Vodafone recently bought out Three AU which could allow more coverage.

Food for thought.

Thank you for the heads-up. I read the Vodafone acquiring Three a while back.

I've been with Vodafone for years, and the service is quite good from my experience. Except once I started to travel to small towns or some middle or nowhere places and do not have any signals. (Friend's Three is much much worse than Vodafone's coverage.)

Well, I should have signed up with Telstra for my iPhone plan.

Is that meant to be a joke?

Actually no. I believe I would be happier to have better coverage and have a bit less quota or pay a bit more, rather than poor coverage when travel out of town.

All depends where you're going, I guess. Telstra coverage in my area has been well.. pretty much non-existent since 2007. Probably faulty equipment but they're not rushing to fix it
