Smoking or no smoking?

Postby keith » Wed 13 Jun, 2007 6:17 pm

Smokers and non-smokers, what are your views on the whole thing? where i live, there was a debate, and they were trying to push for non-smoking in any public place in the entire city of Medicine Hat, Alberta Canada. and there was alot of debate. the non-smokers won, but i thought maybe this would be a good debate topic maybe?

I don't smoke. I've never touched a cigarette, and hopefully I never will. I know there are health risks to smoking, and most everyone today knows them too. People choose to smoke, and I respect their decision; they're only harming themselves and their bodies. But when smokers smoke in public places, the second-hand smoke can effect anyone in the area. It's not fair to those who choose not to smoke. They are breathing in all that junk, and the only real choice they have is to leave and go outside.

I see it as the same thing as pollution regulations for automobiles. Smoking is air pollution, so it should be regulated in public places. Smoking that is done in private homes should remain just that, private, but smoking in public, where anyone could be around that second-hand smoke, should be banned.

Same here. And thanks to the government, from 2nd July, all pubs and clubs will be non-smoking venue in New South Wales.

I personally don't smoke. However, the government do need people to smoke... huge income for them.

This is 100% spot on. I fully support a public smoking ban.

The government makes tons of money from taxing the sales of cigarettes. So do the stores that sell them. Here, in Australia, some supermarkets sell well in excess of $100,000 (AUD) of cigarettes per week. At roughly $10 per pack that equals out to 10,000 packets a week. Just at one supermarket. That's crazy. :o

Nonsmoker here. I'm under the legal smoking age for another year, but even after that I'm staying that way. Health issues aside, I can't afford my caffeine addiction as-is, let alone cigarettes. :P

Some cities around here already have bans against smoking in public places. At first, there was a debate over it, but that subsided within a couple of months. For the past ten years I haven't heard a single complaint about it.

There's a cigarette tax in this state - on the average pack of cigarettes it's a whopping $1.51 per pack. It's been in place since 1939 so it apparently hasn't deterred anybody from smoking any more than the gasoline tax stopped people from driving.

So far, all our posters are non-smokers. Perhaps we shall get some smokers to balance the debate.

im glad to see my topic is startin to take off a bit. i am personally also a non-smoker, and agree with all of you on this. the smoking ban in all public places took place a couple weeks ago, and let me tell you, its nice to go to a bar or anywhere, be it for a couple drinks, or just out for lunch, and not have to be bothered about the 3 people at the next table who are smoking, and distrubing the non-smoker tryin to eat his food. I love it. and i wish the ban would have came in sooner. i agree with the income thing. is that why it hasnt been banned completely in general?

and actually antony, i wouldnt mind some smokers to voice their opinion, to have both sides going, as apposed to just a one sided argument/commentary. cause well, everyone is voiced to their opinion, so some variety would be great!

From next Monday (2nd July), all indoor areas of pubs and clubs in NSW.

Heavy fines apply to patrons and licensees.
  • $550 for smoking in a smoke-free area
  • $550 for obstructing or not complying with inspectors
  • $5500 for allowing smoking in smoke-free areas
  • $2750 for not displaying no-smoking signs

Outdoor areas are still allowed for smoking, but it's cold during winter.

The last time I was in Montreal (October 2006), I noticed the Casino de Montreal removed their smoking lounges and people had to go outside in order to smoke.

ohh ic ic. yeah, here in Medicine Hat Alberta, part of the smoking ban, is your supposed to be 3 ft a way from the building, but it seems that part of the ban is not enforced very much
