Software Needed To Archive Netscape e-mail(Please recommend)

Postby jamworks » Sat 25 Dec, 2004 11:22 pm

I desperately need software that can archive thousands of e-mails that I have on Netscape Communicator 4.7. The program must do the following:

1.) Operate with MAC OS 9.1.

2.) Recreate all of the folders that I created in Netscape Messenger onto my desktop, or to a disk that I've specified.

3.) Copy all e-mails -- sent and received -- into the respective folders, each e-mail being a separate file. The Subject will become the name of the file. (As soon as the program encounters a Subject that has been used before, among e-mails within a folder, it will add a "-2" and so on next to the name.)

4.) VERY IMPORTANT - the original dates of the e-mails must be preserved somehow. The creation date of the archive files cannot simply be the date the archiving was done. It is necessary that the archive files can be sorted according to the original e-mail dates.

5.) The program will understand all common formats (i.e., HTML, JPEG, PDF), and the archive files will display in the same format as in the original e-mails. All e-mail attachments will be archived, and they will display in-line when their respective archive files are opened. I've used Netscape's "Send Page..." feature a lot; the sent web pages should display in-line with their respective archive files.

6.) During subsequent archiving, there will be an option to archive only the e-mails, sent and received, and/or new folders created, since the previous archiving was done.

Please advise.

Profile?

I am not sure what you mean. Netscape Communicator 4.7 has a "Save As..." feature. But that would require saving thousands of e-mails one at a time. And I don't think it can create files that will display properly.

Do you think I will get into trouble if I import all of the e-mail correspondence into Outlook Express 5.01? (I mean, can I be sure it won't corrupt my Netscape files?) Then later I could use Microsoft Office, which has the desired archiving feature, I think.

I am under the impression I cannot do what I want with Mozilla because there are no versions for Mac 0S 9. Am I wrong?

There is Mozilla 1.3.1 which could be found via Andrew's Mozilla Network. If I remember correctly when i used a OS 9 computer i think it was under Netscape or something simlair

opening your old netscape emails

Postby pix3l » Fri 02 Dec, 2005 2:26 am

hi

that happened to me too. and in thinking about your problem, i think i may have a solution for myself as well. i don't think you need new software.

if you still have a zip drive or jazz drive for your mac--i would burn an old copy of the netscape that you used to saved your old emails(shouldn't take up more than 20 mbs), then drag/drop copies of your old email files(the ones you "saved as") onto the zip drive diskette. using the zip drive like a separate drive to do your work.

launch your old netcape version within the zip diskette(or whatever) and open your old emails--then select.copy and paste the text within the old emails into simpletext or MS WORD files-or whatever text documentation program you have, and save to your desktop.

then you can burn all the recopied text docs that house your old email info onto CD's and have them forever!

i hope my solution explanation was clear.
if you have not figured a way to do this-i hope this helps you.

happy holidays!

another idea

just thought of something else.
if you cannot open/launch your old netscape in os 9.1
on your zip or jazz drive, then, you might want to see about getting an older mac to do this. i've seen powermac 7500's on sale for $45.00 on craigslist.org.
so you may want to go that route if the old emails are so very important to you.
