Centrino is a chipset (sort of) for laptops that combine a Pentium M processor with integrated wireless capabilities. Sonoma is probably just a codename, like Banias was codename for the original Centrino.
The difference between the two: one or both of the following:
* Support for 802.11a/b/g/i
* New chip architecture, thereby higher speeds and new functionality (kind of like the transition between Pentium 3 and Pentium 4, or SSE to SSE2).

Sonoma has 533mhz FSB (as opposed to the 400mhz FSB in Donthan), improved power usage features and higher clock speeds.

A Sonoma Pentium-M running at 2.13Ghz with the new Alviso chipset and 1GB of ram is as fast as a 3.6Ghz P4 with the Grantsdale chipset and 1GB of ram, according to Intel. Impressive! This processor is clocked much lower than the P4, and uses much less power than the P4, thus running much cooler. I can't wait to see a dual core version of this designed for a desktop PC :).
