Since you reinstalled Netscape, you may need to reinstall Crescendo too. Sometimes, even though you copy your Plugins folder from one Profile to another, it is necessary to reinstall the Plugins. Ensure that Crescendo is pointed to your Netscape 7 Plugins directory, when you install.

Hi Ramona,

I have uninstalled, downloaded, and reinstalled Crescendo several times now. There are only two files in the entire download and they are mp3xaud.dll and xasound.dll You said for me to Ensure that Crescendo is pointed to my Netscape 7 Plugins directory when I install but the install wont let me do this. There are no options as to where it installs. The Crescendo Installer is putting it in C:\Windows\System.

Can you check out this site of mine to see if you can hear sound with the tags that crescendo says to use. I hear nothing in Netscape but its ok in IE. There is notihng on the page but a background and the sound.

Thanks for your help

As it says at http://plugindoc.mozdev.org/windows1.html#Crescendo , the Crescendo installation is Semi-Automatic. You need to manually type the path to your plugins directory, cause the installer will get it wrong.

Crescendo worked for me when I installed it into Phoenix 0.4, but I don't have any plugins now in Phoenix 0.5

My Netscape 7.01 has Beatnik, not Crescendo, and your tags specify Crescendo, so your page isn't working with that browser either.

My Netscape 4.79 does have the Crescendo plugin, and your sounds play! :P

I'd guess get rid of the "Crescendo" references in your tag, just call it midi. Ramona's page is silent here, no sound in either 4.79 or 7.01. She's smarter than I am, so I must have a problem here. :?

Gskywalkers,

Can you please ensure you have Crescendo v5.1? Those files you mentioned DO indeed belong in the windows\system directories (actually in XP it is \windows\system32\crescendo). Check on the first page of this thread and do a search for those five files I list in an earlier post. If you cannot find them anywhere on your system, please redownload v5.1 of Crescendo.

Btw, the music sounds fine on your site :).

Mr. Tinkles,

The files that you mentioned in the earlier thread are not on my computer so I went to the site that terra had posted
http://plugindoc.mozdev.org/windows1.html#Crescendo
and downloaded Crescendo 5.1 again. There is no way to type anything in when this installs regardless of the fact that they tell you it is semi automatic and you have to type it in. Also, the only two things that it installs are the mp3xaud.dll and xasound.dll. It put them in the Windows\System folder just as it did before. Whether this is some later version or something, I don't know but I have done it four times now and read every detail on the install. About the only thing you get to choose is the "I Accept" on the agreement. :roll:

Well, go to the official source, the Crescendo home page.

http://www.liveupdate.com - I am sorry, it really was a bad lapse of me not to post this previously.

So I installed Crescendo in NS 7.01, I like it better than Beatnik anyway. This time, after I clicked "Next" and accepted the agreement, the box appeared where I enter the destination and NS 7.01's plugin folder was already in there. I didn't have to type anything. That's not how it happened with Phoenix, and I'm thinking that maybe gskywalkers' NS 7.0 attempts are acting differently too. Or else the Crescendo download might be bad. I used a file that I downloaded a long time ago, c51n9x.exe, the size is 1,208,320 bytes. The music on both gskywalkers and Ramona's pages play with NS 7.01 now.

Hi gskywalkers,

Your midi file worked for me, and it's a really good one too! :wink:

I see that terra was able to see the part of the installation where you can direct the install to the appropriate application folder. The two test files will take you to the LiveUpdate page, for the obvious... to test the install.

Hope it will work for you,

Ramona :mrgreen:

Hello Everyone,

I am back again, this time with some good news for a change. I have finally got the sound working in Netscape 7.0. The problem was in the download of Crescendo. There are two different downloads depending on which browser you are using to made the download. The Netscape download is c51n9x.exe and the IE Download is c51xie,exe. The Netscape download dumps it right into the plugins folder where it should be. OK, now that my sound is fixed :lol:

Can you please check out my latest sound page. It works for me in both browsers with Crescendo but I was hoping someone is out there who does not have Crescendo and can check it out. The reason for this is that I have used a javascript provided by Crescendo that will supposedly make the sound play no matter what browser and also no matter what media player is installed. This is kinda important if you are making web pages because you want it to play in as many situations as possible.

Also, if any of you have the time, I am just about finished with my web pages on Netscape Composer and would appreciate any comments or suggestions.

sound tags

Postby gskywalkers » Mon 17 Feb, 2003 1:15 am

Hello everyone,
I have resolved my plugin problem with Netscape and since then I have been messing around with sound tags for several days. I think that Mandrake was right. The <embed> tag does still work in Netscape 7.0 and to my surprise, it also works in Internet Explorer 6.0. It is only the <bgsound> tag used by IE that does not work in both browsers. Somewhere along the line, IE must have started using that <embed> tag. I very quickly threw together a sound page which has only the <embed> tags used and if someone would please go there and let me know for sure that this sound works in Netscape, I would surely appreciate it.

</head>
<body>
<embed SRC="2001.mid" ALIGN="RIGHT" WIDTH=0 HEIGHT=2
AUTOSTART=TRUE VOLUME=80 LOOP=TRUE HIDDEN=TRUE></embed>

The above is the code I have on my webpage,

http://www.geocities.com/SoHo/Square/6412

I have had it for years. It works but my webpage is in Yahoo! Geocities, it was just Geocities when I made the page.

I use Winamp 3. I believe it came with Netscape 7.
All music works on my old puter.

Please note:
<embed> is not part of the W3 specs, so you should avoid using it.
Use <object> instead.

Here's an example for the object tag:

<object data="background.mid">
