Hi Alice,

I uninstalled PS2, and have found that is a distinct firewall problem, unrelated completely to SP2, because it sill exists now that I've activated teh Windows ICF, even if I make sure AVG is out of the sys tray and Norton outgoing is disabled I guess this must be a problem between Norton and teh firewall. My ISP tells me he is starting tor eceive more complaints about this problem, from people who don't have SP2. Maybe Norton will realize this and come up with a fix.

I want to say thank you once again for your extreme generosity during this time of figuring out what to do. I truly appreciate all your help.

Have a great week!

Hi Jeff,

So happy to hear you're finally getting a better handle on the problem.

Earlier in this thread,, in case you missed it, I wrote (03 Nov, 2004 11:37 am):
If you have no luck on a Windows forum and before removing SP2 or leaving the Windows Firewall turned off, I would check into any other internet programs that might be running (web accelerators, antivirus programs, etc) and turn them all OFF temporarily, in case the Windows Firewall is causing a conflict.

So, I would try that route to try and nail down the problem. In all cases, just because a program's icon does not appear in the System Tray, that doesn't mean it is not running. You need to check in the Task Manager's processes list to make sure the program is not still running in the background. In the case of Norton AV, try turning OFF all features (incoming AND outgoing scans, script-blocking, etc) and then DISABLE Norton Autoprotect from the Systray icon, and then test Netscape's outgoing mail.

You may want to consider UNinstalling a suspected program that you really don't need (AVG antivirus, for one).

Let us know the outcome.

I've got a busy day today, so I can only write a bit now, but I'll be back...

I thought things went well, machine seemd OK yesterday, but when I treid to go into Standby last night it froze...I couldn't even shut it off manually using teh power button...I had to turn off my Power strip (the incoming electricity) to turn it off.

I'll need more info to do what you suggested but will be happy to do it forgot about it.

I just want to bring up the fact that Norton AV has been known to create problems, but it,, possibly, the best. Still, I returned the software, after it caused havoc on my old Win98. And, I would not use any of other norton or McAfee software (may be if they paid me).
As for AntiVirus, AVG has been good, and I could run even when McAfee was the boss ( no, I did not have both programs on at the same time).
Zone Alarm, except for a couple total lockups of my computer, has been good to me for over four years. I used Sygate while I tried to sort out my ZA problems.
And, I disabled my auto-update, but allowed it to check my computer, and suggest that I may need some patches. I still have SP1, plus about a dozen of updates. My computer is happy, and so I am.

Alice, more details about what I need:

I don't know how to work with task manager other than I think to bring it up you use CTR+ALT+DEL. beyond that I don't have a clue.

with NAV, are you saying that FIRST, I open it and disbale basically everything. THEN, to right click on the icon in teh Sys Tray and disable autoprotect?

It seems I have some new problem now that it won't shut down...I can only hope it heals itself.

Thanks

Jeff,

Sorry you are having such problems. On the Norton AV issue... it may be a little late but, while looking through the Symantec Knowledge base, I found the following article with information on configuring the Windows Firewall to work with Norton Antivirus:

http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/na ... 2012355706
Configuring your firewall for use with Norton AntiVirus 2004 or 2005
Windows XP Internet Connection Firewall (ICF) or Windows Firewall
Following are the general steps to configure ICF or Windows Firewall.

Windows and Norton Internet Security and Norton Personal Firewall
If you have upgraded to Windows XP Service Pack 2, you will have Windows Firewall. If you also have Norton 2005 programs or the latest Norton 2004 program updates, and you choose to let Norton AntiVirus protect your computer, then Norton AntiVirus will be automatically configured to work with the firewall.

This is basic configuration information. For more detailed information, consult your user's manual or contact Microsoft technical support.

ICF
Follow these steps to manually configure ICF to run with Norton AntiVirus.

To configure ICF

1. Click Start > Control Panel.
2. Double-click Network Connections.
3. Right-click your Internet connection, choose Properties.
4. On the tabs, click Advanced.
5. Click Settings.
6. Ensure that the following entries are selected, and then click OK.
* FTP Server
* Internet Mail Server (SMTP)
* Post-Office Protocol Version 3 (POP3)
* Secure Web Server (HTTPS)
* Web Server (HTTP)
[image]
7. Restart the computer.

Windows Firewall
Follow these steps to manually configure Windows Firewall to run with Norton AntiVirus.

To configure Windows Firewall

1. Click Start > Control Panel.
2. Double-click Windows Firewall.
3. Click Add Program.
4. Click LiveUpdate-Norton AntiVirus.

5. Click OK.

On disabling Norton Antivirus:

I no longer have Norton Internet Security 2004 installed (it included Norton Antivirus). I never did have either the incoming OR outgoing e-mail scans enabled. ALL I was using was the Autooprotect feature (I even had script-blocking turned off and was using Symantec's noscript,exe instead). According to my notes, even after disabling all possible features, some Norton processes were still active:

07-27-2004 Disabled NIS/NAV completely from within NIS/NAV options, including the option to start when Windows starts and the System Tray icons, then rebooted. NAVapsvc.exe no longer running but other NIS processes were: CCAPP.exe CCevtmgr.exe CCsetmgr.exe CCproxy.exe all in C:\Program Files\common files\Symantec Shared

So, It may not be possible to turn Norton AV completely off, but you CAN disable all the features from within Norton Antivirus (incoming and outgoing email scan, the script-blocking, and Autoprotect from what I remember). The Autoprotect feature can be left on within the program options, if you wish, and then disabled temporarily, from the NAV system tray icon (that would be my choice) to test Netscape mail-sending.

Hope that helps.

Thanks again...I'll give those things a go.

Anyone have any idea how to access System Restore points past Septmber 30? When I click on the left arrow on teh calender in SR, it only goes to September, and only teh 30th "lights upp." I want to restore my machine to a point before I had SP2 on it, and I think I did it mid Sep or earlier.

Thanks agin.

Jeff,

Your system restore question is better asked on a Windows XP forum but, as far as I know, the dates in BOLD should be available in System Restore.

Here are my bookmarks on WinXP System Restore:

Alice,

Sorry to have so many questions! I have given serious thought to showing my computer the window of my 6th floor apartment....

I forgot...don't you use XP? I have also posted this on an XP forum...

You are correct, the bold dates are the availbale ones. I get no bold dates earlier than 9/30.

I am checking those links.

Yes, I use Win XP Sp1. I got rid of Norton Antivirus awhile back since the free 6-month trial ended (it came pre-installed on my new Dell Dimension 8300) and I've always been an eTrust EZ Antivirus user, so I added that back.

James Eshelman is the expert on Windows Shutdown issues so the forums at http://www.aumha.org would be your best bet. See this article:
