Stand alone 7 with 4.8 mail

Postby Ralph2 » Sat 12 Apr, 2003 9:01 am

Hello
I rather like the way 4.8 mail works as opposed to the mail in 7. So following a sugestion here I have installed the sillydog stand alone browser.

But, I seem to have to jump through several hoops to go from my browser to the mail. I guess it would be too much to have Netscape make this seemless.

Is there any way to include (add) an entry in the window menu selection to allow selecting my 4.8 mail. currently all that is available is window > navigator and window > composer

Thanks for any help
Ralph

All you need is to jump through one hoop. Just create a new shortcut to NS4.x mail, by adding to the Properties Target, <space>-mail, if you were able to get into the Communicator without selecting a profile. If you needed to select a profile you will need also <space>-P <space>name of profile. You do that on the shortcut, right click|Properties and select Target. <space> means just leave a space. If you place this shortcut in the Quick Launch toolbar, all you need to do is to click on it. You can have both NS7 Navigator and NS4.x mail open, so the hoop is one click,

I want to use the Netscape 7 browser with my 4.8 mail. But because my ISP requires the full email address with the "@" (such as rdnzl@myeastern.com), 4.8 cannot be configured to download my emails.

In the Preferences menu: Mail & Newsgroups: Mail Servers: "Outgoing mail server user name" I need to be able to enter my full email address as part of my login/password combination. As I said, the 4.8 will not allow anyhing past the "rdnzl" even though I need the whole address for login purposes.

I forver get an "authentification failed" dialog box asking me to enter the "correct" password when I go to my email window (command 2 on a Mac OS 8.1 machine) and my passord is always unrecognized because my user name is not proper.

Are there any workarounds for me?

I don't know about your problem, because if you have a username, which should be "rdnzl", it should be automatically tied with the server name, whatever it is. I suggest that you enter "rdnzl.myeastern.com", ands see if it works.

Hi Rdnzl

This has been common problem for the 4's. I had the problem for a "spam" program that required the "@" sign. Follow Ramona's solution.. http://home.att.net/~cherokee67/nsmailuserchar.html
