Stand-alone MFCEmbed for older systems

Postby Pu7o » Sun 15 May, 2005 4:51 pm

Sometimes older systems are uncapable of running Mozilla or Firefox, because it's just too slow. And even k-meleon might be too heavy for them. Most of those users are stuck using old versions of Netscape Communicator and IE. However, and even though it went by mostly un-noticed, all zipped builds of mozilla distributions include a file called "mfcEmbed.exe" which is actually a very usable mini-browser if you don't need advanced features like themes or tabbed browsing.

For those users, i created a stand-alone archive consisting solely of mfcEmbed and its dependencies, and saved around 15mb of uncompressed "junk", based on the very latest Mozilla Core.

It can be downloaded here: http://kidzilla.planetaclix.pt/mfcembed.zip

Known bugs:

- The about: and about:config windows don't work, because i wiped out most of the chrome.
- about:mozilla and about:buildconfig do work, however
- There are probably more, but i haven't found them yet.

Enjoy! :)

The Mozilla Foundation did make official stand alone nightly versions of MfcEmbed, but they were discontinued around the time of the Mozilla 1.5 release. If you want to take a look at those, they are still available from Mozilla's archive server.

Anyway, it would be interesting to see what you can do with this project; right now it looks just like what the old MfcEmbed nightlys looked like.

Edit: This doesn't have any horiznatal or vertical scrollbars. It doesn't really bother me, as I have a scroll-wheel on my mouse, but users without a wheel may have difficulty navigating pages without scrollbars.

A small note: MFCEmbed also has the capability to edit webpages, try File - Open Editor Window or something like that. I'll check out the problem with the scrollbars tomorrow
