I'd like to purge my start-up programs so that my boot time is more reasonable (right now it's close to a minute and a half). Can you recommend a free program that will list my start-up programs and tell me which are essential and which I can turn off?

There's one included with Windows. Open the start menu, put msconfig into the search bar and hit enter. In the msconfig utility click on the 'Startup' tab up the top, and you'll get a list of startup applications. You can then untick the programs that you no longer want to open when Windows boots.

Hi Mandrake. I know about msconfig. The issue is in knowing "which programs" are essential and which I can safely uncheck. I think it was Castlecops that used to give information of that nature. Any suggestions?

I believe Spybot has this functionality as part of the "advanced" UI. Whether or not its startup program descriptions are any good is another story - I've never used Spybot for that purpose.

Another approach is to change your main boot hard drive to SSD. You would be amazed with the increase in speed.

^^^ This is good advice. SSDs are quite cheap now, and the increase in speed is awesome. I noticed a massive increase from two Western Digital 10,000RPM Raptor drives to a single Vortex II SSD.

See Black Viper Windows 7, SP1 for all Services. You pick the ones that you don't need, based upon your usage, and change them to either Manual or Disable. I do recommend that you document carefully your changes - 'old' (default/current), and 'new'.
