Startup screens in Netscape & Mozilla

Postby Ghostman 1 » Tue 13 Aug, 2002 8:03 pm

Hi all<
Man I just can't seem to get rid of stupid startup screens. I have tried all most everything. I tried all the things mention in the other post by calaroma.
Is there a way to go into program files /netscape/Mozila and Delete this junk?

As Shark Daddy said, the -nosplash command option should work, but if not, there is also a -quiet command option as well.

Yes - that is the command line, but I personally opt for the splash screen - good ol familiar Netscape (or Mozilla) 'hello'. Gives me time to shuffle some papers in order before my start page opens.

S.D. isn't -nosplash, the command for 4.x?
I know that -quiet works work all latest Moz and NS, and I use it all the time.

They both still show up as valid command line options if you do mozilla /? at a command prompt.

(well, for some reason you have to pipe the results to a text file...but they show up in the resulting text file).

Yes, but it was decided to use -nosplash as a carry-over. It also may be decided in the future to get rid of 'quiet' as it's not that obvious a comand; there has been discussion in the Mozilla community about this.

Actually, -nosplash DOES make a heck of a lot more sense than -quiet.

I can see people using the -quiet switch and then wondering why the heck mozilla is still beeping at them when they get new mail. Point well taken, I'll quit mentioning the -quiet switch :).

Startup screens.

Postby Ghostman 1 » Thu 15 Aug, 2002 9:08 pm

I am not talking about the Splash screens,I am talking about the startup
screens..... In Mozilla It will come up before your home page and take you to Mozilla WebSite,And in Netscape it will come up everytime you first startup
netscape. I would like to get rid of these screens. I want it to go into my Homepage at startup and not the startup screen.
How can i fix this problem.... :D

Oh! Well, for the record, I knew that was what you were referring to, I was just testing you to make sure YOU did! yeah...that's the ticket....

Anyhoo... Edit | Preferences | Navigator. Right on the top-level settings page for "Navigator". Choose Home page under "When Navigator starts up, display..".

STOP, you're not done! Now, down just a smidge from there in the same pane, you will see a section titled "Home Page". In the entry area just to the right of "location", manually enter the url for whatever you want as your home page. Personally I suggest the following: http://sillydog.org/forum

Okay, now click "okay". Close Netscape, close quick launch if it is open (otherwise the settings won't necessarily take effect maybe...). Go have a coke and a smile, come back and restart Netscape...viola, your start page!

Hmm, okay. I guess a more thorough approach...

First I want to verify that we are indeed talking about the home page. In other words, you ARE referring to the first website that loads automatically when you start Netscape or Mozilla, correct? If the answer to that is yes, please write down the site...that MIGHT come into play later.

Now, I have made two screen shots available that I would like you to look at, because I want to know exactly how your settings are for them. Don't worry about them saying mozilla instead of netscape, the relevant settings should be identical in setup. Here they are:
Start Page preference settings
Netscape/Mozilla shortcut properties

The first one shows what I described in my last post regarding how Netscape is configured to startup. It is reached via Edit | Preferences | Navigator. If you could please check your configuration and let me know how yours is set for the two areas I have circled in red in the screen shot.

The second one is the shortcut properties for whatever icon you use to launch Netscape. Disregard that mine says mozilla, that is irrelevant. You can see yours by right-clicking on the icon and selecting "properties" in the menu that pops up. What I want to know is if yours has a URL AFTER the program in the area I have circled in red. If there is one, remove the URL from the shorcut.

Please post the results of what you find and we'll go from there. Go ahead and keep what you wrote down, but for now I don't want to take the next step without knowing how this went....it gets nasty after this.

Erm...this just occured to me. Are you using some proprietary dialer from Earthlink, MSN, Southwestern Bell, or some other ISP with custom software? If you are, and the browser is being auto-launched upon connection, that might automatically be shooting it a URL as well....I hope the answer is no, because I won't have a clue what to do then.

Awaiting your reply 8)

Er, it just hit me that you said this is happening in both Mozilla and Netscape. Are you sharing the same profile with both? I hope the answer is no, because that is bound to cause problems.
