Stumped with Thunderbird mail transfer

Postby Jim_P » Wed 08 Dec, 2010 4:57 pm

Our office recently purchased a new computer to replace a 10 year old relic. The new machine has Windows 7 as an OS, and as such, does not have Outlook Express email.

I figured that this would be a good time to convert to Thunderbird, a mail system that I am much more comfortable with.

Thunderbird was set up fine, but I cannot get its Import function to point to a different machine on the network.

Is there an easy way to transfer old Outlook Express messages on one machine to new Thunderbird mail on another?

Transferring the Address book via .csv file was easy... it's the messages transfer that I am having problems with.

If I understand correctly, you did "transfer the address book .csv, or did you? And, after the .csv file was on the new computer, you were able to import the address book into Thunderbird.
It should be the same way for the mail files. Like exporting the OE files from OE, on the old computer, transfer such file to the new computer, and then import them. Mind you, I have no experience with OE, other than it is there, in case I have some mail problem, and I have to discuss the matter with my ISP. Even that does not work well, though.

I would personally recommend installing Thunderbird on the old computer that you upgraded from, and then simply copying over Thunderbird's profile data, which is more portable than Outlook Express's. That way, you can perform the import locally, without having to point Thunderbird to another machine on the network, and copy over the relevant data over the network, via CD, or other medium.

Thunderbird's profile data is located in Windows' Application Data folder, which you can easily access by typing %appdata% into Windows Explorer, on both your old PC and the Windows 7 PC. All you need to do is copy the "Thunderbird" folder in Application Data from one machine to another. If you've already launched Thunderbird on the Win7 PC, I would recommend removing its Application Data\Thunderbird folder before copying over.
