I was able to successfully set up my Cisco Linksys E2000 (now located in the middle of the house) as a wireless access point, by running a Cat 5e cable from the E2000's Internet port to one of the regular LAN ports on the Linksys WRT54G in the basement. With the laptop one floor above the E2000's location, now connecting to the E2000, wicd is now displaying a signal strength in the mid-to-high 80's, versus the mid-60's it was displaying previously.
Regardless of where the laptop is situated in the house, it is now receiving a significant wireless signal.
