Switched to Fedora

Postby Edward » Thu 30 Apr, 2015 5:52 pm

An upgrade from Debian Wheezy (7) to Jessie (8), trashed my system. The new kernel only booted up once, could not get past the login screen after that and although there was hard drive activity (rather fast) when it trashed, the hard drive activity light didn't light up.

Found Fedora easy to install and use.

Is it also easy to install under virtual machine?

I believe it's possible to run Fedora as a virtual machine. I've never run anything myself in a VM, so I'm not familiar with the procedure.

Same as most other Linux distributions, they offer live images as ISOs that can easily be popped into visualization software. Fedora has worked great for me with both Hyper-V and VirtualBox.

I've used several Linux distributions in the past 13 years (when I first installed SuSE) and I like Fedora a lot.

Debian has a two-year release cycle, Fedora's is every six months.

I could never get into Fedora. It's nice, and it's polished. But it was never for me. I started with Ubuntu (well, Debian actually but that was not a pleasurable experience) and I've just gotten to know it so well, and the way it works that I have a really hard time getting with a different distro.

I have had both an Arch install and a Fedora install that I used as daily drivers for a while, but I always end up going back to Ubuntu.

I don't really see myself branching off anytime soon, especially now with Ubuntu MATE. I was using Linux Mint for a while because they had a published stable build with MATE; but no need to now!

On a final note, glad you're enjoying Fedora and do keep us updated. I'm always interested to see how other people are experiencing Linux. Even though I don't use it nearly as much as I used too (blame Office365 and OneDrive) it's still near and dear to my heart.
