Tbird 12.0.1 addons compatibility

Postby Anonymosity » Sat 05 May, 2012 5:58 pm

After I updated Thunderbird to 12.0.1, it claimed that 3 of my themes were incompatible. This did not seem likely, because I had bumped up the max version for the target app in the install.rdf file for each of them. I was able to reinstall them after disabling compatibility checking, and they worked fine. I also decided to get the latest version of the MR Tech Toolkit beta extension. Thunderbird refused to use it, claiming that it was incompatible. I thought that the newest versions of Mozilla applications made extensions compatible by default. Why make an exception for this one extension? After bumping up the max version for Toolkit, Tbird used it without complaining. Then just to see what would happen, I clicked the "Enable" button next to the "Compatibility checking is disabled" warning, and everything continued to work, but after closing and reopening the window again, the warning was back. Why? If I enable something, why tell me that it is disabled after I reopen the window?

I turned off the computer overnight, and started it up again the next day, launched Tbird, looked in the Addons window, everything is working, and the compatibility checking warning is gone. That makes me wonder - what is Thunderbird 12.0.1 doing? First, it tells me that something that is supposed to be compatible is not, then it refuses to believe that compatibility checking is re-enabled until after I shut down the computer and then restart it.

I have seen some weirdness with TB, but I use it very sparingly, and have few add-ons. But, the only thing which I see is that MR Tech Toolkit, is, from what you say, that it is a beta. The other add-ons appear not to be betas. Do I read this correctly?

Only MR Tech Toolkit extension is a beta. The 3 themes were not originally compatible with Tbird 12, but I had bumped up the max versions for them, and they were being used anyway. Only with version 12.0.1, all of a sudden, Tbird decided that they were no good. It is quite happy with them now.

Do you have Help|Submit Feedback, in TB?

Greetings to all,

I really don't understand all I know about TB & (FF for that matter)......

from what I understand, there has been some changes in the "compatibility" checking of BOTH TB and FF.

In about: config - filter on

extensions.minCompatiblePlatformVersion
and
extensions.minCompatibleAppVersion

Note settings ?

Then do Google for the same two preferences....

Many results pertaining to both FF and TB.....

It appears like bumping the "install.rdf" maxVersion does not work far all extensions.

Hopefully someone has a better grasp on this than I do - if so - please post and let us know.

If the structure of the application has changed significantly, and the extension acts upon the application itself, depending on the old structure, then it will not work. Old extensions have more chance of working if they only affect files outside of the browser.
