After some extreme heat and extreme weather, we finally had our first taste of winter. Minimum at 11°C and maximum of 22°C today in Sydney. A very welcome temperature for many people.

We had a wonderful weekend with temperatures around 70F/20C, and very few clouds. Sadly I was indoors in meetings for a Software Engineering class the entire weekend, in a cramped room with no windows no less.

All of the larger shops are shut here in Perth, all day. Some smaller IGA stores, and the petrol stations etc are open, but that's about it.

The weather here is very nice, in the mid-20s. By the end of the week we'll be in the lower 20s.

We've been having strange weather here the past few weeks. It's either been quite warm (~26°C/~80°F) and sunny or cool (~13°C/~55°F) and rainy. Today, we hit 27°C/81°F, and we're forecast to have highs around 26°C/80°F for the next two days, and then it is supposed to cool down to around 18°C/65°F by late-week with rain showers.

Yesterday it only took about a mile of walking for me to get completely soaked. It looks like we're going to have rain until Friday too... It's supposedly Spring but so far we've mostly been having snow and rain.

Today is the coldest day so far this year, and the coldest May day in 4 years.

It has been pretty cold for the last two weeks. Although no beautiful snow here, I am sure most people prefer winter to summer for one simple reason: far less annoying insects (cockroaches, mosquitoes, flies, fruit flies...). Also, people can wear their beautiful coats in this weather.

Ah, Antony... you have never been to the Pacific NW I can see. We have no cockroaches, fruitflies or mosquitoes here (or so few that I've honestly not encountered any in the past eleven years). Flies? Yes, we have flies but in truth not very many. I'll take summer any day of the year over winter. Our summer on the coast is mild (about 70 degrees F) and our winters are mild as well (usually mid 40's although it can get colder). The problem with our winters is the constant rain.

The temperature seems nice there.

Australia is a sunburn country, many areas (national parks, etc) are simply full of flies. And those flies like to get onto people's faces. Extremely annoying. Depending on where people live, cockroaches is also a big problem here.
One thing I learnt: don't waste money on cheap insecticides and insect repellents, they don't work or don't work well. Get the brand named one, and as a general rule, the higher the price tag, the more effective they are.
During hot summer days, the insecticide shelves in supermarket are usually empty.

You know, Antony, the truth is.. it always seems nicer somewhere else. Our skies are too gray for too many days. Yes... the temperature is usually quite nice but gray skies on the coast can really depress a person. Oh well... it is what it is. Take care.
