The past couple of days, the weather in the local area has been brutal. Was close to 100 degrees (F) today and is forecast to be the same on Saturday. It should cool down a little bit beginning on Sunday.

Finally, we have some sun, after about 2 weeks of rain and freezing cold temperature. Still cold, still no beautiful snow, but at least we have sun. I shouldn't complain much I guess.

Sydney has been unusually warm (for July/August), we had 10 consecutive days of 20+°C.

The forecast isn't looking good:

About to get a bunch of rain here associated with Hurricane Irene that is making its way up the east coast of the United States. This storm is massive and could make a direct hit on the major cities of the northeastern U.S.

Here's a screenshot from Google Earth just to give a sense of scale: http://i.imgur.com/u47K9.jpg

Good lucky to everyone who is under the path of Hurricane Irene.

(Or try to escape to beautiful Boston?)

Obviously you haven't read up on the hurricane, as Boston is straight in the projected path of the hurricane. Nobody's going to be escaping "to" here, more like "from" here!

Personally I'm going to wait it out; we'll see whether or not that was a good idea on Monday.

CBS reports that Hurricane Irene has downgraded to a tropical storm as it hit New York City's Coney Island.

I have faith that beautiful Boston and picturesque Quincy will be fine.

Well, a couple hours of very strong wind, but almost no rain - though I hear places only ten or fifteen miles away experienced flooding. Lots of downed tree branches and quite a few areas around here without power, but other than that all is well.

This is what the worst of the roads near me (that I could find, I didn't look very hard) looked like:

Here's the same area on Google Street View, for reference:

Glad to hear you're safe and that the damage which could have been much worse was less than predicted. Thank goodness that is over. Hopefully the flooding will not materialize.

The Irene did not reach the first news headline here, not even the top three. this indicates a lot. There's report of officials over-reacting.

Also, according to Boston.com, it is a big relief that beautiful Boston and picturesque Quincy are fine (as I said before), no major damages.

By contrast, central New York seemed to have been hit pretty badly. My usual 7-hour commute back to school took 13 hours, five hours of which were spent going 15 miles around a flooded part of Interstate 90.

I've also read that 40 people lost their lives and that the damage is in the hundreds of millions of dollars. While it could have been much worse, it was still a devastating storm.
