Test your AV Software

Postby Mandrake » Wed 05 Jan, 2005 9:50 pm

Take this opportunity to test your anti-virus program:

http://www.freewebs.com/jaffa30/AV-test.rar
(Password to open the RAR-file is: flashback)

This is a RAR archive with 10 trojans in it (so don't execute them). Just extract them to your desktop or something and see which ones your AV finds, then delete the rest of them without running them.

I tested with a few different types of AV software:

NOD32 detected all files
Kaspersky detected all files
Avast detected 9 files

This isn't good. Antivir Free Edition only caught five of the ten as they were being extracted. Hmm... :(

With AVG Free (Version 7.0.300, Virus Database 265.6.8):

When manually scanning the .rar file itself, AVG detected nothing.
When extracting the files, AVG detected nothing.
When manually scanning the folder that held the (now-extracted) files, AVG detected all ten files.

I encountered a similar situation with Symantec AntiVirus Corp v 8.0. It only detected 6 out of 10 trojans after they have been extracted...not a good sign. I think the same thing will happen with the Home editions of Norton Antivirus.

I'll continue to use Antivir, but I do a House Call scan with Trend Micro every few days now as well.

I think some McAfee AntiVirus users should give this AV test a try too. I'd like to see how well they do compared to Norton AV users.
