Most current Linux distributions come with something called WINE, that in a
somewhat limited sense, emulates the core of Windows 95, enabling some
applications (but definitely not all applicationss) written for Windows 9x to
run on Linux. If you take a closer look at my Linux desktop screengrab,
you'll notice that I've also got PowerPoint 97 on there as well.

Although, I don't actually use WINE to run Windows apps on Linux. I use
something called CrossOver Office v1.3.1. This is not much more than a
variation of WINE with a GUI, that enables easier installation of Windows
applications, and a little bit more stability than the regular WINE builds.

Well, I figured since I have upgraded my computer and stuff - I'd repost my desktop :) This is under Windows XP Pro . . . (You can see it in the bottom right hand corner, above the system tray)

I was running at 1600x1200, but my monitor is showing it's age so I lowered the resolution in order to get a better refresh rate.

Heh, why am I not suprised DJGM does not have Internet Explorer icons on his WinXP Desktop . . . ?

If anyone is wondering about the lack of any icons apart from the standard three (Classic Start Menu) - I've got one of those Internet keyboards with the buttons at the top :)

I notice you have 3 different Netscape icons on your
desktop, how come you don't have the "Lighthouse" icon on your desktop? I have it on my old computer.
I think removing the lighthouse was the beginning of the demise of Netscape. ;) I remember changing back to the Lighthouse when the first 'N' appeared in perhaps NS 4.73, I'm not too sure about that tho'.

I'm pleased that our desktop images are no more than 550 pixels in width. I once was at another board that had a similar thread, and scrolling past half a dozen 1280x1024 JPEGs is no fun.

It just so happens that I've got a spare copy of Windows 3.1 on 6 diskettes,
that I sometimes install on my other PC (for old times sake) How does one
go about getting that antique OS to go online via my LAN card. I'll assume
that I'd at least need a copy of Trumpet Winsock installed on it.

It'd be nice to go online with that classic edition of Windows at some point.

Windows 3.1 has no networking support. You need 3.11 for that!

How are you doing these Windows desktop screenshots? Specific software?

I've always hit PRINT SCREEN and pasted into a word processor.
