I'll take it a step further with 9 versions of Netscape running simultaneously.

Two of those are 16-bit versions, running in separate memory in Windows NT. It's also worth noting that Netscape 1.1N automatically launches an extra window. This is actually "Netscape's Hidden Frame," which I mentioned previously at the bottom of the first page in this thread.

Obviously this can go on and on, since you can run as many versions as you want prior to 4.0.

The Opera web browser has long been known for its Multiple Document Interface (MDI), which later evolved into "tabbed browsing." One of the drawbacks in the older versions was that you could not take advantage of separate windows and MDI windows at the same time. Well, some of us found workarounds. Here, I managed to have two separate windows of Opera 3.62!

So how on earth did I accomplish this? Simple. I pressed F1 in the browser (bottom window in screen shot) to bring up the Help Window (top), and then pressed Control+Space Bar. This effectively brings up Opera's home page inside the Help window! From there, it's a simple matter of navigating to a search page, and then you can load virtually any site you wish.

One side effect to this bug (or is it a feature?) is that you cannot enter a URL directly into the Help window with the F2 key. Doing so will bring up the normal browser window. Other function keys like F3 will also bring up the normal browser window. The Search button works, though. Fortunately, some other common shortcut keys work as well, such as G and Control-G.

This bug has been removed in later versions, but I didn't let it stop me from finding other means. More to come on that....

The Opera windows in my previous post look more compelling as minimized icons. Is it just me, or does that red question mark invoke a sense of mystery?

As promised, here is a similar situation with Opera 6. The bottom window clearly shows the presence of tabbed browsing, while the help window at the top is completely separate.

So how was it done this time around, since the Control+Space Bar bug was removed? It turns out that in version 6, you can hit Control+Backspace in the help window to move up one directory. From there, you can access any local directory and browse to, say, Netscape's bookmark file to get to any site you desire. As with prior versions of Opera, you simply get the title of the webpage in the title bar without the browser name branded when you surf inside the help window. It's a fairly useful glitch if you ask me.

The strangest thing just happened to my desktop while tring to open a shortcut. I doubled clicked the shortcut, and the "Properties" dialog appeared for that shortcut. I thought somthing with that shortcut was messed up, so I selected anuther shortcut, the same happened. I tried a few other few icons on the desktop, same happened. Now, somthing was causing the icons to get selected as I clicked them all. Then I tried clicking out of it, on an empyt spot od the desktop, and the icons multiplied. It happened a few more times. I then tried a right-click on the icons, nothing happened. So finally, I clicked the start menu, and opened the Control Panel, and navigated Explorer to the Desktop, and there I found all of my icons, where I could manually delete all of the dupelicates. It turns out 90 extra icons had been created! I then exited Explorer, and all was once again fine with my desktop.



You can see all the icons that were reproduced that have the "Copy of ..." text. You can also see where more than one icon is selected, and in some some places, icons are even stacked on top of other icons!
