For the last week or two, I've been seeing this unwanted and extremely annoying pop-up window from Mozilla.


Since Firefox 3.6.xx does not have the stealth self-update built-in as later versions, which also pushes users to latest of whatsoever version at ridiculous rate I shall add, Mozilla sends out this message window is really a low act. Must everybody uses the latest whatsoever version Mozilla rushed out to get some quietness while surfing?

There should be a setting to turn off those notifications. There is such an option in the SeaMonkey Preferences under Advanced/Software Installation.

I do not get those notifications. I disabled updating in Firefox, and I have to check the FTP site or the Mozilla "all" site to see if the next version is available.

I got the same notice, so I went to Tools/Options/Advanced/Updates, and sure enough I had a check mark next to check for updates/Firefox. I unchecked it.
A lot of people do not realize that Firefox, Addons, and Search Engines are check by default, but you are given the options to uncheck.
The setting is unchecked in Firefox 8.0, and when I check for updates through Help/About Firefox, it tells me, correctly, that it is up-to-date, but I bet that through the Tools/.../Updates it would tell me that there is 8.01.

I noticed on their FTP site, they have some pre-beta builds of Firefox 11 for 64-bit Windows. Even though I now have 64-bit Windows 7, I'm not sure I want to try such a build just yet.

Funnily enough ... even though SeaMonkey 2.6 is out now, and I have the update feature set up to let me
know updates are available, but to not automatically download, it hasn't informed me of the update yet.

I'm still on v2.5 and in no particular hurry to upgrade ... I suppose I might update it manually this week.

I went to Help|Check for updates, and was told that there were no updates.

The notification can either check daily or weekly for updates. Not sure of the exact time of day this occurs, but I generally check the SeaMonkey Project web site daily to see what is going on.

Firefox 9.0 was released the other day and yesterday I noticed a 9.0.1 directory on the Mozilla FTP site, so there could very well be a SeaMonkey 2.6.1 released at some point.

I updated from SM2.3.3 on my old laptop (running WXP Pro) yesterday, using the Check for Updates option in
the Help menu, and was prompted to update to SM2.6.1, which I did. I've just clicked that option here on my
main PC (W7 Ult) and it says there are no updates available. So SM2.5 is still installed here on this PC.

I guess I might update it manually over the weekend if I'm not prompted with the Updater, and if I'm still sober!
It could well end up being my first ever SeaMonkey installed with a banging Christmas hangover!!!

Hang on a cotton-pickin' minute ... !!! I just noticed my UA string on my earlier message shows SM2.6.1!


How the heck did that get there?!? I don't recall being prompted to update from SM2.5, and I haven't
installed it manually from the standalone setup exe file! I can't SM updating itself by stealth even
when I have the program set to only let me know when an update is available! It's only Chrome
that has the totally invisible completely stealthy background auto-update!


I dunno ... maybe I ran the updater myself last night when I had one of my occasional all-nighters!


(NOTE: Not one single drop of any alcohol based beverage was consumed. Mainly Pepsi Max and coffee!)

The default is to download and install the update automatically. It should then prompt to restart.

I have noticed when I set the preferences to check but to NOT install automatically, once I manually install afterwards, the new version seems to enable automatic installation again.

I concur. I have never seen this, but it may be the end of my use of Seamonkey. An additional issue is that I was able to download new mail while I was using the browser. Not anymore. In fact, not only Mail waits to download until I click on it, but it freezes. Thunderbird was slow, but it never froze. And, if I check to open both browser and mail on starting SM, the entire program froze.

I gave up on Thunderbird about two months back and went back to Windows Live Mail. No more bloat and no more freezing issues.

Fulvio... I honestly believe that ALL browsers are going to start auto-updating. It's a sign of the times. Chrome began this, IE is set to begin it in January and Mozilla will undoubtedly follow suit. There's less hassle and frankly I don't want to be bothered by this stuff. My Norton Internet Security does this and has done so quietly in the background for a few years. That's the way I want my browsers to behave as well.. just do it and there's no need to inform me. My time is better spent in the pursuit of other things and I know that my browser will always be up-to-date.

It took me a while, but I figured out the problem, although not the reason for my problems. The issue of getting mail downloaded went away, and, the, I started getting Page Load Errors. I, simply, could not connect to the Internet, except for my ISP mail. After trying to use new profiles, or trying to start in Safe Mode, I got suspicious of my Firewall, and, sure enough access In and Out were blocked, for Seamonkey only. I made the necessary changes in the Firewall settings, and here I am. And, what do you know, I checked for updates, and there was no change in my Update settings.
Now, why was only Seamonkey affected? May be because it was default. But, it, surely, was freaky, and I, almost gave up on a perfectly good program.
