Thunderbird migration problem to a new PC

Postby lboeckl » Thu 22 Sep, 2005 4:11 pm

I had a laptop which died from a dead motherboard. I had Mozilla Thunderbird on it as it is my email program. I have the hard drive and have mounted it as a second hard disk in my new laptop. I have installed Mozilla Thunderbird and was able to move my address book but can't find the mail files to move them. Any ideas how to migrate my old Thunderbird mail files into my new laptop?

You are words which I would never use, like Move, which is the same as cut and paste. Cut is one the easiest way to lose everything, if you put things in the wrong place. The other is migrate. I am not sure what that means.
You can use, in principle, the same technique used for Netscape and Mozilla, except that the Thunderbird profiles are in the Thunderbird folder,or, for WinXP: C:\Documents and Settings\user_name\Application Data\Thunderbird\Profiles\Mail\mail account

Thunderbird migration problem to a new PC

Postby lboeckl » Fri 23 Sep, 2005 9:11 am

I have tried to search my hard drive and can't find any of the mail file names listed in the links provided. I have also tried to walk to the files from Documents and Settings but can find no App data folder after my user name. I am using XP Pro so I don't know if that is the issue or not. Oh well I guess I should just accept the fact that a couple years of mail is now gone. Thanks for trying. Take care.

I should have given you the entire link for this matter. In Win2k and WinXP:
NOTE: These files are hidden by default.
To see hidden files:
1. On the Tools menu in Windows Explorer, click Folder Options
2. Click the View tab
3. Under Hidden files and folders, click Show hidden files and folders
4. Disable "Hide File Extensions for Known Files."
5. Click OK

That goes for the App Data. If you go to to your username, it should be there but as an hidden folder. I, normally, can see the hidden folders, but not the contents, if the files are hidden. Do as it says above.

When I did that I can now see some files. However for some reason when I pointed my mail program at them it didn't bring the mail in. There was no folder labeled Mail. So I think I am going to just back up the new mail folder frequently now and hope that when this happens again that I can restore that folder. Thanks for your time and effort.

It came to me that it is vital to make sure that you have the correct path in your Mail and News settings|Server settings|Local directory. Like this:
C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Thunderbird etc.
The big nuisance is that Local Directory's entire path cannot be copied in its entirety, although one can track it to: Profiles\profilename.xxxslt|Mail|accountname.
However I have an account in: C:\Documents and Settings\username\My Documents\New Office Files\Mail\account2
I had a problem with my default profile, which I was able to reuse, until I saw this mess? I never pointed the path there, and I did not create any New Office Files folder. So beware. These were not hidden files/folders.
