Thunderbird stops fetching mail

Postby stairs » Thu 16 Aug, 2012 11:33 am

Starting a week ago, Thunderbird 11 stopped fetching my POP3 mail. Everything works OK when Thunderbird is started, and I can manually fetch mail several times with out fail. However, after about a half hour there is no response from the "Get Mail" button and it does not fetch mail automatically. All other aspects of the program function normally. The action bar at the bottom shows "No messages to download" and never changes. If I exit and restart TB mail fetches normally for a little while. The OS is XP SP3, and all other network functions, including firefox work as normal.

What I've tried:
I've downloaded TB14 and intralled it over the existing TB. No Change.
Restarted TB14 with add-ons disabled. No change.
Completely uninstalled TB14, deleted registry entries, reinstalled TB14. Re-entered server information manually. No add-ons installed. No Change.

Any Suggestions? I'm inclined to think that this is not a TB problem, as I run the same version on an XP SP2 and a Win7 SP1 computer.

I am, also, using Win XP SP3, and I have been using Thunderbird, since it came out, with no issues. I have the latest version of Thunderbird (as well as Firefox), but I use, preferentially, Seamonkey, also the latest version. I have set up seven different accounts, and except for some occasional weirdness of two IMAP accounts, everything have been working fine with Thunderbird and Seamonkey.
Typically, problems are in the profiles, and I see that you have done a thorough (and most likely unnecessary) job with the program, but not with the profile. You may have issues, if there is too much stuff in the Inbox, and stuff like that. Are you, by any chance a mail pack rat? If you have reached the limit, and, only remove a bit of mail, and, compressed folders, or not, you may have issues like you describe. I don't know if you can set up the same account, and start from scratch, but if you can, and the newly set up account is fine, you have the answer. Too much mail!
I, purposely, have many accounts, precisely, to avoid overcrowding. And, the fact that you are ok with the other OS means nothing, if your profiles were created at different times.

Are you using the Inbox for permanent storage? It was not meant to be used that way. You can create new folders in an account and move old messages into those. Do you compact your folders regularly? You should, to get old deleted messages out of the database. See this page:

Fulvio, I did delete the profile, I wiped everything related to TB off the computer.
Anonymosity, Mail is going in to an empty, new mailbox.

Here is what I've found new: Disabling AVG and ZoneLabs does not help. When the program is not fetching mail I can go to Tools>Add-ons (which loads) and then TB will fetch mail again for a while. If I send a message, TB will fetch for a while.

There are messages in the Error Consule:
ComponentReturnedFailureCode: 0x8055000a [nsIMsgIncomingServer.getNewMessages]
chrome://messenger/content/mailwindowoverlay.js line 2467

I believe this message appears when I attempt to fetch mail manually.

If you removed the profile, then you have no path for your mail. Did you create a new account, after removing everything? How did you remove your profile? Something is either not said, or I don't get it.

Fulvio, the third line under "What I've done" says: "Completely uninstalled TB14, deleted registry entries, reinstalled TB14. Re-entered server information manually. No add-ons installed. No Change."

Completely uninstalled, including registry entries, means that I deleted everything that TB put on my computer. Re-entered server information manually means that I didn't have an existing profile or the new install would have captured that information.

Please help - if you can.

I had, sort of, understood what you had said, in first place. Except that uninstalling the program does not remove, automatically, the profile. I have not uninstalled TB in years, so, it is possible that they have introduced a step to remove the profile. My profiles are, totally, independent of the program, and are located in a different folder, and issue not understood way back in the days of Netscape, and, still not fully understood.
Since the profiles remain intact, I, purposely, use new, yet untested versions of TB (the same applies to Firefox and Seamonkey) with an older profile. That's why I did not, fully, comprehend what you were doing.
And, I must say that it is important to say, at least, parts of the profile, i.e. the old folders. Although, at this time, I have no idea what is going on with your system.
I would create a new profile, which you can name, any way you wish. And, then make sure that you are, actually, using it. To give an example the folder in which TB is installed is: "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Thunderbird\.
And the shortcut is: "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Thunderbird\thunderbird.exe" . To bring up the profile manager you can modify the Target line, by adding -p, with a space before it, thus:"C:\Program Files\Mozilla Thu"C:\Program Files\Mozilla Thunderbird\thunderbird.exe" -p . If you called your new profile: TB 14, then to path to open your mail will be: "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Thunderbird\thunderbird.exe" -p TB14. If you did not do this, TB will open with your existing profile. I understand that you said :
Re-entered server information manually
, so from zero profiles, you had one, but, did you really remove the profile?
The profile folders are hidden, by default, and are in this location: C:\Documents and Settings\user_name\Application Data\Thunderbird.

When you delete the registry items, as the OP mentioned, the profile is destroyed. I think that is what he was trying to say.

I suppose, but which registry items must be deleted?
I am referring to this link
