The computer is at least 12 years old, correct?

A computer has in it a small battery that powers a tiny 'clock'. Do you have in your house a clock that is powered by a battery, rather than being plugged into your house power? This is the same idea. The battery is present so that the clock is maintained even when the computer is not plugged into the house mains.

In size and shape this little battery is like the battery in a desktop calculator, similar to but larger than the battery in a hearing aid. This battery usually lasts for ten to 12 years.

The 'time synchronizer failed' error message is consistent with this battery having finally become discharged, and the clock has stopped operating. When a computer is started it tests whether the internal clock is still working. It 'looks at' the clock time, executes a series of instructions that it knows takes a certain amount of time, then 'reads' the clock again. If the clock has not changed, the computer knows that the clock is not operating, and it issues the error message.

You need to open the computer case, carefully remove the battery (the holder is designed so that the user can replace the battery), purchase a new battery, and insert it. The next time you boot the computer you will need to set the date and time information so that the clock is again correct.
