Transfer Files from IE6, Outlook Express to NS&

Postby dhumpal » Sun 10 Nov, 2002 12:27 pm

After having a system failure and a hard drive re-format, my computer tech guy told me to just use IE6 and Outlook Express. I am tired of the various problems with them so I want to make NS7 my browser and NS mail my mail client. NS7 DID transfer the bookmarks from IE6 but what I want to know are two things: (1) HOW TO TRANSFER SAVED MAIL AND SAVED ADDRESSES FROM OUTLOOK EXPRESS TO NS7 and (2) HOW DO I GET THE BOOKMARKS FROM IE6 INTO A MORE WORKABLE AND PRACTICAL FORMAT ON NS7. If possible, could you be as detailed (names of files, where they are, etc.) as possible. Thank you.

This is just a brief reply to get you started. Read your help files or get more detailed help from experts on this forum.

1. Bookmarks: Once they are imported you may rearrange them anyway you want. Open up NS7 and click on Bookmarks|Manage Bookmarks. Also, go to Help|Help and Support Center and do a search for the term, "bookmarks." There is all sorts of good info here.

2. For mail, again go to the Help and Support Cenater and do a search for the term, "import mail." It looks like you will want to open up the Netscape mail window and click on Tools|Import and Netscape should guide you from here.

Netscape 7 is a terrific program. Stick with it and enjoy!

As for question 1: first go into mail in NS7, then select Tools/Import and you have choices of OE, Outlook, etc. I was using Eudora as in between, because I could import anything I wanted, from Netscape7 or any Mozilla, as long as I selected the location of pref_js, or address in ldif format. I have never tested the Import function of NS7.
Question 2:it is pretty messy, but no worse than anything coming from NS4.x. I thought that those links were hopeless, but I have moved them to the different folders which I have set up in my Personal Toolbar, if they are good . So what if the title has a bunch of %20's. It can be done, but you have to be patient.
Since you have Windows 98, your files will be in C;|Windows\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\name of profile\blahblah.slt and either bookmarks.html or in the Mail folder. But you should not have to do a thing with the files. You should get separate folders for the imported mail, and you can access the Bookmarks, by clicking on the one of top (the other one in the Personal Toolbar is just taking up space), and select Manage Bookmarks. It is up to you on how to manage them.
