Trying to load Windows onto a Netscape computer

Postby Maric » Sun 30 May, 2004 11:14 pm

My work has given me an old netscape computer to take home for the kids to play with. I am trying to clean the disk and then load windows onto it. Problem is that I'm pretty certain it's got a reasonable sized HDD on it, but after formatting C: and going into loading up Win 98 (just to be on the safe side), it tells me that Setup cannot find enough disk space. Is this something to do with partitioning? On the intial scan for errors it only tells me that C: and D: have no errors, which seems to indicate it only has one partition - however an old server would have more than 205MB of space. Do you think I should try and load 95 on instead, in case it's a space problem?

What you should do is try to partition the drive and enter 100% for the main partition. Boot onto a recovery floppy like the ones from Win98 and type in FDISK. When you get to the selection menu, select Delete Active partitions and delete all of the active partitions. Now restart your computer, booting onto the floppy again. Now type FDISK again and get to the menu. Now create a partition with 100% space on it. Exit FDISK and restart again. Boot from the floppy and format the hard disk by typing FORMAT C: and let that finish. Now try to install 98 and see what happens.

Not Computers, but Servers

Postby goGecko » Sun 29 Aug, 2004 10:15 pm

The Netscape computers were early Netscape Internet Servers used several years ago and apparently now available on the used computer market. However you can install Windows and use them normally which is what this thread discusses.

Now here's a top marketing idea for the beancounters at AOL . . . how about Netscape branded PC's!

They could do a deal with one of the popular PC manufacturers, such as Hewlett Packard, and have
the Netscape ISP software preinstalled on them, along with the Netscape 7.2 browser suite. They
could be sold at a subsidized price, on the proviso that the buyer signs up to the Netscape ISP.

SeaMonkey = Swiss Army Knife: It's versatile, reliable, and contains useful tools.
Windows Internet Explorer = Old Swiss Cheese: Full of holes, and it stinks!
