Trying to move old mail 6.2.3 to 7

Postby jillpmcd » Tue 22 Oct, 2002 4:26 pm

I've read the profile post back in September...I get everything BUT the contents of the different mail folders. I moved the profile info into the 6.2.3 profile and then tryed to update to 7 through profile manager - because it just wouldn't see it when I copied the profile folder (as suggested in other post) thought maybe that was cause I was going from 6.2.3 to 7....so tried to convert, got everything BUT the contents of all the mail folders. I know I could just forward it all to myself but there's got to be a way to make this work!
So glad to have found you guys...was almost ready to abandon Netscape (and we've always used it!... my ISP won't support it, and actively discourages its use)
Thanks for any suggestions...not a programmer or anything so idiot-proofed instructions are helpful!!!
Thanks everybody!

I would suggest, if you can keep your existing Netscape profile, everything will be fine.

Just uninstall Netscape 6.2.3 (don't delete profile)
You might want to back up your Netscap profile.
Then install Netscape 7, Netscape 7 should be able to find the profile.

OR
you can keep current Netscape 6.2.3 and install Netscape 7 into another folder, Netscape 7 will find the profile as well.

you might want to see Knowledge Base for relatead informaiton.

I have seen reports that having 6.2.3 present would cause problems. I had it for one month, with no problem. But, I created a separate profile for 7.0. I did not try to convert, so you may already have a separate profile. Locate the Mail subfolder in the 6.2.3 profile.slt folder, right-click on the Inbox file, and select Copy. Then go to your 7.0 Profile .slt, open its mail, and right-click and Paste. You should be able to have your mail.

Hi Jill,
I moved the profile info into the 6.2.3 profile and then tried to update to 7 through profile manager

Did you move the 6.2.3 prefs.js file to 7.0? If so, then that is your problem. Many of your settings will not transfer over if you store them in the prefs.js file. It is recommended to use the user created user.js file whenever possible for non-profile specific preferences.

Many of the lines in the prefs.js are profile specific, which include the salted directory name in the path. These must be changed manually if you wish to use them in a new profile. However, if your previous prefs.js file is old, it is recommended to start from scratch to eliminate any incompatibilities. You may still be able to copy/paste/edit lines that refer to your mail accounts, but success is not guaranteed.

Open Notepad
Click on File|Open
Browse to prefs.js
Open the file
Click on Search|Find
Enter the "Old" salted file name
Change to the "New" salted file name

Example:

old
D:\WINDOWS\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\jill\12ab34cd.slt\

which you will change to:

new
C:\Windows\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\jill\56ef78gh.slt\

If this is not the case, then just ignore.
