Your best bet is to use a search engine submission site.
Submit Express is one such site.
Another good idea is to submit your site to the
Open Directory Project, whose listings are eventually incorporated into other major search engines every so often.
Third, you can use search engines' private submission forums, i.e. just submit to Google, or MSN, or Yahoo.
Fourth, you should understand how Google's search technology works. Most other search sites sort by text relevancy, while Google does something entirely different. Google's crawlers look to see how many sites link to another site, and sort by the number of links. So, to get a high ranking on Google, it's always a good idea to get linked to by other places. As before mentioned, submitting to the Open Directory Project is a great way to do this.
