Trying to remember and track down...Netscape 2.0 Beta

Postby Andrew T. » Mon 01 Dec, 2003 9:45 pm

Please forgive me if I'm vague on this, but it's been seven years since I've used this version of Netscape!

I recall that around 1996, my parents installed a Beta version of Netscape Navigator 2.0 on our computer with Windows 3.11.
I recall that the Beta "expired" after a number of days, upon which we upgraded so some other version.
There's not much else I remember, but I definately recall that the Program Manager icon for (only?) this particular version was the upper half of a ship's wheel (similar to later Netscape 2.0x and 3.0x icons), only with a small Netscape "N" in the corner of the icon.
I believe there were several Beta versions of Netscape 2.0.
Can anyone help me narrow down what particular Netscape Navigator 2.0 Beta I could have been using at the time, and possibly where I could find a 16- or preferably 32-bit version thereof to download? (For nostalgic, but certainly not practical reasons).

Thanks, Wellander--you steered me in the right direction!

It looks like the Netscape I had in mind could have been Navigator 2.0 Beta 3.

This is the icon--I wonder why they didn't use it for Netscape longer. I love the way the ship's wheel glows.

That is a well-designed icon. It's too bad Netscape didn't continue to use it.
