Ubuntu Linux 6.0.6 released

Postby Antony » Sat 03 Jun, 2006 10:51 am

Ubuntu, a free and open-source Debian based Linux sponsored by Mark Shuttleworth(*) has released version 6.0.6 of it's browser.

You can download it or request a free shipping of CD from http://www.ubuntu.com/ .

(*) Mark Shuttleworth founded Thawte, the world's second largest certificate authority, in 1995, and sold Thawte to VeriSign for $575 million USD in 1999.

Shouldn't it be "operating system" instead of "browser"? :P

Why is the shipping free ? Are the Ubuntu devs paid somehow so that they can send CDs for free ? (Donations ?)

The Ubuntu's sponsors Mark Shuttleworth and his Canonical Ltd pay for the cost of CD and the shipping.

Mark Shuttleworth is the first African nationality to be in space (a paid space travelling programme).

Considering Ubuntu Linux was relatively unheard of few years ago, providing free delivering to your doorstep is a smart and costly way to gain awareness and market share.

UBUNTU Linux 6.0

Postby Raj Luvs Linux » Mon 01 Jan, 2007 3:38 pm

I've just purchased a book in "Bible-mode" ("UBUNTU Unleashed), and it has the 6.0 C/D ready for installation.
I'm running Windows XP on my laptop, and will install UBUNTU as my "second" OS... although The Big U will be the one I'll be using to avail myself of all the learning perks it has. I've got a slight case of "cold feet"... will I screw it up... strategy I'll use, and which has usually worked well for me in the past is to r-e-a-d s-l-o-w-l-y and c-l-e-a-r-l-y. I will share the adventure with you guys, and ideally I'll be able to inspire a fellow linux-er.

Feedback is welcome, or if you just want to say hello, share an UBUNTU story, or tell me, "Right on, Raj! May TUX be with you!"

In the "for what it's worth" department, Canonical Ltd. is headquartered on the Isle of Man.

The Wikipedia article (link above) indicates the Isle of Man is not part of the United Kingdom, but is a Crown dependency.

Raj,

Good luck with the Ubuntu installation. Even though I have been using Linux since the summer of 2003, I still don't know everything there is about it (probably never will), but in the early days, if I messed up something and couldn't fix it, I simply re-installed Linux.

Thankfully, I haven't had to do that recently. :D
