Unable to re-install XP on raid after reformat

Postby honey007 » Wed 28 May, 2003 2:19 am

I have decided to clean up my dual boot system and
restart again.
I have a 2+0 raid already intact (2 x 40GB 7200RPM Maxtor
harddrive). Reformatted and repartioned the system using
fdisk but when I tried to install XP, everything went
well until XP is loading screen, after which it gave me a
Stop error 0x0000007B inaccessible_boot_device.
I have tried repartioning with partition magic and inside
the XP setup, but all prevailed.
I have checked for bad sectors but there was nothing
wrong. I even tried a virus scan, but nothing either.
Someone told me there maybe boot sector virus, how can I
get rid of that? I have tried using fdisk /mbr, but also
doesn't help.
I was also able to specify the raid driver by using F6 during setup. I am running Promise Fasttrak raid. :? :? :? :?
Could someone kindly advise?

Solution to Raid controllers in Windows XP SP 1a

Postby elstar » Fri 01 Aug, 2003 7:56 pm

Hi,
I was trying to build a new PC with Adaptec 1200A raid controller and a new copy of Windows XP SP1a and was getting Error: 0x0000007B on reboot. After a week of looking I found this solution.

The solution was found at Adaptec's web site, I have copied the article below:-

I installed Windows XP from the Windows XP CD that includes SP1. When the text-mode setup has finished, it asked for reboot. I pressed ENTER to reboot and the setup of Windows XP cannot find a boot device any more. It shows a blue screen with an error message: STOP 0x0000007B inaccessible boot device.

This information applies to the following Product(s):

- Adaptec ATA RAID 1200A

This information applies to the following Operating System(s):

- Windows XP SP1

Answer
The problem comes from Windows XP SP1 and is not an Adaptec problem. When you install Windows XP with the Adaptec drivers for the 1200A RAID controller, the drivers are properly used, but at reboot, Windows XP tries to install the High Point driver which should be embedded but it is not present.

Workaround:
When the "STOP 0x0000007B" error occurs during installation, shutdown the system, move the RAID controller to a different PCI slot and reboot.

Windows XP will then re-initialize the RAID controller and use the Adaptec driver which was installed before

Installing Win XP SP1a onto system with Raid controller

Postby elstar » Fri 01 Aug, 2003 8:09 pm

In addition to my previous post, during the debug phase I tried swapping the Adaptec 1200A raid controller with a Promise 2000TX raid controller and a Kouwell raid controller. They all showed the same problem that XP would not restart (Stop: 0x0000007B) after the first reboot.
