Unable to update Java on Windows Vista

Postby Edward » Sat 10 Apr, 2010 4:20 pm

The Java software indicated an update was available. However when I ran the installer, it displayed an error:

Unable to launch the Java(TM) Update installer: The requested operation requires elevation.

Has anyone else encountered this before? It's the first I've seen something like it.

I've run into that before. The only way I was able to get Java updated was to download the new version from Sun's website.

When I did that and installed it, Java updated and the problem has been nonexistent ever since.

The web site indicates Update 19 is being downloaded, however after the file is downloaded, the file information indicates it is actually Update 18 (which is what I had installed), not 19.

Then I don't know what to tell you.

When you go to the Java website, and click on download do you see this screen?:

When you open the installer does it say that you already have the current version installed?

The page indicates I do not have the latest installed, Version 6 Update 18.

But when I go to the download page, it tells me I am downloading Update 19, but the file that results, indicates it is Update 18 not 19.

For the file that downloads, the page has

Java for Windows - Firefox/Mozilla
Recommended Version 6 Update 19 (filesize: ~ 10 MB)
Windows 7, Vista, XP, 2000, 2003 and 2008 Server

the incoming file is jxpiinstall.exe (897K in size) and on the Details tab, it shows

Java(TM) Platform SE 6 U18

The Firefox/SeaMonkey plugins also indicates this is 18 not 19. Their web site is not providing the Update 19 file.

Plugin info:

Java(TM) Platform SE 6 U18

File name: npjp2.dll
Next Generation Java Plug-in 1.6.0_18 for Mozilla browsers

I am getting this link, i.e. for Update 19. To make sure, look at the manual update list.

I use the Secunia Online scanner. When it reports a problem with Java or any Adobe software, the proper method of updating is never quite clear. Sometimes the updater in the scan will work, sometimes not.

My culprits are Java and Adobe.

I find the simplest thing is to uninstall what I have for Java and Adobe Reader, and use Adobe's uninstaller for Flash. Then just download and reinstall the updates.

The link on the right, had the correct file to download. Update 19 has been successfully installed (and tested).

Thank you for the link. :)

This morning, the updater (from the manual download and install of Update 19, link above), indicated Update 20 was now available.

This time, the updater worked as expected.
