unlocking a usb dongle

Have a new dongle that is locked to one network. Need to change networks which involves unlocking. Have found an unlocking code but don't know how to use it. The method of placing a foreign sim in the dongle doesn't work. Can anyone give me an easy to follow method of using the code to unlock the dongle?
