Unwanted Multiple Sessions of Netscape

Postby Indyrod » Mon 26 Jan, 2004 7:17 pm

When visiting some web sites that have popups or a specific type of java script banners, Netscape spawns another session, even though you don't actually see it. It even happens occasionally on "My Yahoo", if they are using certain types of banner ads, not friendly to Netscape. The only thing I can do, is close my Netscape browser, and then hit cntl, alt, delete, which shows another session of the browser has been activated. I have to manually "end task" on that spawned browser session, and then begin again by starting Netscape from scratch. This seems directly related to java script code which somehow starts that new session of Netscape, even though it does not actually appear on the task bar. I'm wondering if anybody knows what I'm talking about, and if there is a remedy? I've had this problem with all versions of Netscape I have tried.

Right now, I am running NS 4.73 on Win95. thanks

Not really.
I assume you are talking about the additional Netscape window opened by pop-up or tricky JavaScript.
Two solutions... once the new window is open, (make it the active window, i.e. the window you are working), then hit Ctrl + w.
OR upgrade to Netscape 7.1 or latest Mozilla and have pop-up windows blocker enabled.

There is NOT a visable NS window opened, that can by closed by Ctrl W, as you suggested. Think of it as a new session of NS opened within Task Manager, but it is not visable on the Desktop or Task Bar. What it does, is render the active NS window inoperative, and it has to be closed as well as the additional session of NS sitting in the Task Manager by hitting Cntrl Alt Delete, and then hitting "End Task". If anybody has seen there active window of NS become inoperative, this is usually the problem. It's hard to explain, unless you know a lot about Netscape and Win95. I'm not upgrading my browser, the browser is fine, it's just a problem it has with certain java script.

ok, you see something extra . What is it? More than one Netscape entry?
I think that a lot of people, here, are quite familiar with Netscape, and some are still using Win95. I used NS4.7x and Win95, till two years ago, but it is impossible to help if you do not give details.

Okay, it is due very likely due to Netscape Communicator has crashed or hanged and couldn't exit properly for System.
The main cause of this ... Java (Java Applet) used. not JavaScript

My suggestion, upgrade to Netscape Communicator 4.79 or 4.80 with better Java support. If such problem still exist, try disable Java (Applet) from Netscape's control panel if you don't need to access websites with JavaApplets.

I'm trying Fulvio.

If I do a cntrl, alt, delete, I will only see one Netscape entry. If I close the active NS window, the entry still shows as being active, even though no NS windows are open. The only way to close that ghost entry, is to hit cntl-alt-delete and do an end task on the remaining entry. I think Anthony is right, it's caused by a Java Applet that causes NS to start another session without opening another window. When I have time, I'll probably do as he suggested and upgrade to 4.79 or 4.8. thanks for the help.

Fulvio, do you remember me from several years ago? I used to be a frequent contributor at this site, before it got so fancy.

I am not Fulvio, but I somehow feel "Indyrod" sounds familiar.
If my memory serves correctly, you were here in the very early days when SillyDog701 had black background and in subdomain, also in old message forum. Image
Over those years, SillyDog701 not just having makeovers but improvements and expansions.

Yes you are correct. After I thought about it, Fulvio came along later. I used to answer a lot of questions on the original board, as well as learning things myself. You've came a long way. Something that puzzles me, I have to log in everytime I come here, even though I check "save the password", and yes my cookies are always enabled. Glad to be back on board, thanks.

I really don't know why, because it should be possible to save the password, things do not work well unless you don't log out. This is definitely true of AOL9, which would even refuse to send my e-mails. I have not tried 4.8, which is now reduced to a mail client, but try to exit without logging out, saving the site as a bookmark, which you can place in your personal toolbar.

I never log out when I leave this forum, and I do use a bookmark. I'm a member of several PHP forums, and they all save my password just fine, except this one. :?:

Indyrod: You have to login each time even if you check 'Log me on automatically each visit' box while using Netscape 4.x, it remembers to keep you logged in while using Netscape 6.x or higher, though. No, it probably couldn't be fixed. As Antony's thread about Communicator 4.x and the forum says, 4.x does work reasonably well here, but some things just aren't going work like they do in a new browser.
