UPDATED 09/16/05 - FF 1.0.7 and Mozilla 1.7.12 RC released

Postby J-M » Wed 14 Sep, 2005 6:33 pm

New Mozilla Firefox 1.0.7 and Mozilla 1.7.12 Release Candidates are available, reports MozillaZine:

The Mozilla Quality weblog has announced the availability of Mozilla Firefox 1.0.7 and Mozilla 1.7.12 release candidates. These builds feature several security fixes, including a solution for the IDN link buffer overflow vulnerability. There are also some some stability improvements, which should lead to fewer crashes, and fixes for regressions introduced by previous security updates.

I hope that Mozilla 1.7.12 is a bit more stable than 1.7.11 which has given me just a few minor problems with crashing while closing, unlike the rock-stable 1.7.8.

Before downloading a nightly build from the above links you may wish to check for more a recent Release Candidate and get additional information on testing from http://weblogs.mozillazine.org/qa/

As I see it, the real purpose of making these testing builds available to the public is to elicit feedback, so that the final product can be made as bug-free as possible.

To those not interested in testing these nightly builds:
I would suggest applying the "No IDN" patch or manual workaround described here (What Firefox and Mozilla users should know about the IDN buffer overflow security issue) and in this thread and then waiting for the final Fx1.0.7 and Mozilla Suite 1.7.12 releases, which should be available shortly from the links at http://www.mozilla.org/

EDIT: I just wanted to add that the Firefox 1.0.7 / Mozilla 1.7.12 installers will automatically remove the (No IDN) changes made by the patch (when upgrading into the same install directory, I gather, if you don't uninstall first and remove leftover files). See https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=308281

Mozilla Suite 1.7.11 has been rock-solid for me, and I use it as my main browser.

EDIT: I've only seen two application errors in Mozilla Suite 1.7.11 in over a month, less than firefox or IE (as seen in Admin tools > Event Viewer > error properties)

Here's a link to one "crash on exit" bug I also found at http://www.squarefree.com/burningedge/ that will be fixed in Mozilla 1.7.12 :

Why do you think that 1.7.11 is not blocked by this?
My opinion is that even 1.7.10 should not have been released with this annoying crash on exit, this was the most frequent crash reported by talkback.

I agree 100% with Alice, on the stability of mozilla1.7.11.
And, thank you for the note about the effect of the new version on the patch.
At this point, there is no rush.

I have to agree with profman, as I have had nothing but problems with 1.7.11, on the rare occasions I use the browser. Many crashes!

I used Mozilla 1.7.11 for almost a month as my main browser, on two computers, and I have experenced almost zero problems or application crashes. In fact, I have nearly no stability problems with any Mozilla Suite 1.7.x release; that's going back over one year.

For the last few days, I've been using one of the 20050910 vuilds of Seamonkey 1.0a on my Mac,
and so far, it's been about as stable as a final build! In fact, I'd even go so far as to say that it's
actually a bit more stable, and marginally faster than Mozilla Firefox on this computer!

While I've been recently using the Mac OS X versions of Firefox 1.0.6 and the new 1.5b1, after
extended use, this system gradually became slower and slower, using up more and more RAM.
In fact, I was even seeing the 2.7GB of remaining space on my main partition reduced to less
than 500MB, while the HDD was being paged for virtual memory. At one point, all space on
my main partition was depleted, so I had to restart the machine to get it all back again!

The only thing likely to slow down this machine now is VirtualPC running Windows 2000!

SeaMonkey = Swiss Army Knife: It's versatile, reliable, and contains useful tools.
Windows Internet Explorer = Old Swiss Cheese: Full of holes, and it stinks!

I have had problems when I did not uninstall the previous version of earlier Moz1.7x, and so I did that even when threre was a minor fix.
When I saw Ramona reporting that 1.7.11 was crashing, I waited a while, but then I uninstalled 1.7.10, and installed 1.7.11. I have been using the same profile as I did with 1.7.5, but I have two more on reserve, created when I was concerned about specific builds.
As for Seamonkey, I have been using only the nightlies, with great success. And, I love that crudely drawn critter!

Mozilla Suite (Windows) download link at
http://sillydog.org/forum/viewtopic.php?p=63402#63402 doesn't work, there was an error at original Mozilla Quality posting. Editing a post was not possible any more, please use the most recent download links mentioned later. (Thanks Ramona for pointing this out)
